Role Details: As a Mechanical Engineer within the nuclear defence sector, you will play a key role in the design, development, and maintenance of vital mechanical systems that support national defence infrastructure. The position requires ensuring compliance with strict safety, regulatory, and security standards while contributing to the performance, reliability, and integrity of complex engineering projects. This role is predominantly home-based, providing flexibility in day-to-day working arrangements, with occasional site visits required for project meetings, inspections, and commissioning activities. Key Responsibilities: Develop, assess, and maintain project and design documentation, including design changes and concessions. Produce and manage EIMT schedules, procedures, and results to meet design and safety case requirements. Prepare and review safety reports and technical justifications for mechanical design modifications Provide technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders. Conduct Independent Technical and Peer Reviews (ITA/IPR). Apply engineering principles to the design, operation, and maintenance of systems in nuclear or high-risk environments. Review and verify calculations, technical reports, and safety case submissions from colleagues and contractors. Key Requirements: Essential: Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical plant and installation design assessment. Proven ability to produce technical justifications for mechanical design modifications. Strong application of engineering knowledge to existing and emerging technologies. Experience providing mechanical input to multi-discipline projects. Degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Incorporated Engineer (or equivalent experience). Desirable: Experience within nuclear or similar high-hazard environments. Knowledge of full lifecycle engineering processes in high-risk industries. The Project Engineering team within our Asset Management business area provides support services to the Nuclear, Process, Power Generation and Oil & Gas sectors across their whole asset lifecycle. Within this team we have an opportunity for a Senior Project Engineer to join us in Renfrew. You would work as part of the team providing a wide range of expertise across the group as well as undertaking work across the wider Asset Management business. Main duties within this role: Project manage and/or lead engineering projects Preparation of tenders, responsible for estimation of scopes at each stage of a project lifecycle, and identification of client needs Development of supply chain partners for complex projects Prepare and manage project schedules, resource plans and period project reports Provide technical support to Asset Management Contracts Write reports, specifications and supporting technical documents Clients primary focal point for allocated projects from kick-off to close-out Responsible for the safe delivery of projects to budget and schedule Responsible for specifying and delivering the quality assurance requirements of projects Ensure good communication between engineering disciplines and all project stakeholders Manage project changes effectively Ensure an effective risk management process is adopted Good stakeholder management and client interfacing skills Development of relationships with internal and external customers and organisations Occasional site based work will form a part of this role as the Senior Project Engineer, you will take responsibility for ensuring delivery of all the engineering, procurement, manufacturing, fabrication and commissioning activities for the life cycle of the contract or work package in accordance with the overall Project schedule. You will ensure planning and delivery is in accordance with all safety, quality, time and cost parameters to meet the needs of the Project. Ideally you will be able to integrate all of the various engineering disciplines, developing an understanding across the project and working closely across the Asset Management and wider Altrad Babcock business. Your projects will require: Design Coordination – Coordinating design inputs from both in-house and external design contractors’ responsible pro-actively identifying design issues, managing design development. Procurement Assistance – Input to procurement process, including technical specification development, tender reviews, preparing purchase requisitions, cost and schedule monitoring, workshop inspections and expediting. Fabrication Monitoring - coordination of interfaces with fabricators, inspecting equipment deliveries, management of fabrication processes, managing inspection and test plans, monitoring and reporting progress.
