    Senior Reserves Assistant - Broads North

    Contract type: Permanent / Working hours: Full time
    Salary : £26,121 - £28,351 per annum Our client is the oldest Wildlife Trust in the country and Norfolk's largest environmental charity, committed to the protection and enhancement of Norfolk's wildlife and wild places. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the charity's Broads North Reserves team based at their incredible nature reserve, a 600ha site of open Broad, reed bed and fen, wet woodland and open grazing marsh. The role will be predominantly working at Hickling but also other important sites within the Broads including Martham Broad NNR and Pigneys Wood. The charity is seeking an enthusiastic and practical person who will carry out a variety of tasks, including habitat management and infrastructure maintenance using machinery such as a Truxor, tractors and boats. This is an exciting time to join the team as they work on a vision for the future of Hickling, with adaptation to habitats and visitor opportunities as well as work for the benefit of existing species such as the iconic Swallowtail butterfly and rare birds that call Hickling home like crane, bittern and newly arrived spoonbills which now breed on the nature reserve. The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of wildlife conservation and habitat management techniques as well as effective communication skills, both with colleagues and members of the public. The post will work within a close-knit highly motivated team and an ability to work well with colleagues is vital. The successful candidate will also have at least 2 years' experience working on a nature reserve or similar. You will assist in undertaking a variety of different conservation management tasks to protect wildlife and enhance habitats including fen mowing, reed cutting, scrub management, water level management, wildlife monitoring, stock handling and maintenance of infrastructure. The closing date for applications is midday on the 28th May 2025.

All profits are donated to their parent charity for the benefit of nature conservation in Norfolk.ResponsibilitiesThe focus of this Service is on providing high quality ecological expertise to ensure that their client's projects move forward while ensuring protection and benefits for nature and wildlife. As a key member of the team you will undertake a wide range of ecological consultancy contracts on behalf of the Service's clients including:Protected species surveysSite and habitat surveys and assessments (including BNG)Mitigation strategies for a wide range of habitats and species.Conservation management advice (species and habitats)Ecological Clerk of Works on selected projectsIn addition, you will have line management responsibilities for an Assistant Ecologist and will delegate for the Principal Ecologist as needed.About YouThey are looking for someone with a degree in ecology or its equivalent and ideally membership of CIEEM or be working towards it. Applications are particularly welcome from Ecologists who hold at least one Natural England (of other equivalent) protected species licence preferably Bat Survey Level 2 (or above).You will enjoy working as part of a small, committed team and relish the challenge of working with a range of clients on different projects. In addition, you will ideally have:A minimum of 4 years relevant work experience.Understanding, and experience in the application, of UK environmental legislation and policy.Experience in ecological field survey work (including to UKHab and protected species).Have up to date knowledge of, and familiarity with, survey guidance for a range of protected species.Experience in report writing (including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, management plans and Ecological Impact Assessments), and development of mitigation measures.Previous experience in conservation or with a consultancy business;A valid UK driving licence and access to own transport with business insurance use.
