DescriptionAbout ZegoInsurance is one of the most important industries in the world and one of the least loved. It's complex. It's confusing. It doesn't champion the customer. Zego is changing that. We combine telematics, technology and a relentless focus on the customer to build motor insurance products that actually reward good drivers and serve the businesses and individuals who keep the world moving. We operate as a regulated insurance group with a UK Holding company and MGA, a Gibraltan carrier and a growing Portuguese subsidiary, with finance sitting at the centre of all of it.Purpose of the roleThe External Reporting Manager is accountable for the delivery of statutory accounts, the SFCR narrative, the external audit cycle, the tax compliance pack and FCA / GFSC regulatory returns across the Group and MGA. You'll work directly with the Finance Director, the actuarial function, the Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, external auditors (Deloitte) and external tax advisors - and you'll have real visibility with the CFO, the Audit Committee and the Board. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to own a meaty external reporting remit end-to-end, in a regulated environment, with the breadth of an insurance group and the pace of a tech company. Why this role and why now? You'll be the single accountable lead for the full external reporting cycle of the Group and MGA, working directly with the Finance Director and CFO, with regular Audit Committee exposure. You'll be supported by, and expected to lead, a Finance function that's genuinely AI-native. If you want to build the technical depth of a Big 4 senior manager, with the breadth and pace of a scale-up, this is the seat. What you’ll be doingStatutory accounts (FRS 102) & External audit managementPrepare and deliver annual statutory financial statements for the MGA and Group holding entities under FRS 102. Draft technical accounting papers on judgemental areas (intangibles, going concern, intra-group transactions, R&D and other tax items) and own the disclosure checklist. Maintain the group accounting manual and ensure consistent policy application across UK, Gibraltar and Portuguese entities.Act as the primary day-to-day contact for Deloitte across the MGA and Group. Run the audit timetable, deliverables tracker and Prepared By Client list. Manage substantive audit queries, draft responses on technical positions, and prepare the Audit Committee paper pack. Close out management letter points within agreed timescales.SFCR (Solvency II Pillar 3 narrative reporting)Own the production and consolidation of the annual SFCR narrative across Sections A to E, working closely with the actuarial team (who own the QRTs and technical provisions), risk and capital management, and the Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs. Co-ordinate the cross-functional sign-off process and the external regulatory audit of the SFCR.Tax & FCA / GFSC regulatory reportingCoordinate the corporation tax compliance cycle with external advisors (current and deferred tax computations, group relief, transfer pricing documentation).Manage VAT (including any partial exemption and reclaim positions), PAYE/PSA, and the R&D tax credit cycle including any HMRC enquiry support.Own the tax provisioning conversation in the year-end accounts and maintain the SAO sign-off file.Prepare and submit FCA returns for the MGA and Group (RMAR / RegData), and group-level GFSC returns. Maintain the regulatory reporting calendar and the controls framework around submissions (data lineage, four-eyes review, evidence pack). Support ad hoc regulatory requests and thematic reviews.Controls, process and teamOperate and improve the financial reporting control framework (key controls catalogue, evidence packs, reconciliations). Drive automation and the use of AI and reporting tools to compress close timelines and improve quality. Mentor junior team members and act as a technical sounding board across the wider Finance team.AI expectation at ZegoAI is core to how we work at Zego. We actively encourage and expect every Finance team member to use AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, and our internal MCP integrations across Snowflake, Gmail, Drive, Slack and Looker) to do their job faster and better. You don't need to be an AI expert - but you do need curiosity, fluency with at least one AI tool, and the appetite to make AI part of how you operate every day. You'll be expected toUse AI as a first-draft accelerator for technical accounting papers, audit query responses, regulatory submissions, disclosure language and Audit Committee narratives - bringing well-prepared drafts to the FD rather than blank pages.Automate the manual in reporting cycles - reconciliations, variance commentary, consistency checks, tie-out files - using AI alongside Excel, Python and our existing data stack.Apply judgement, not just output - AI accelerates the work, but you remain accountable for technical accuracy, auditor-readiness and regulatory compliance. We expect you to challenge, refine and own every output.Build and share what works - if you find an AI workflow that compresses a process, we want you to document and roll it out across the team. What you’ll need to be successful EssentialACA / ACCA qualified, ideally Big 4 or Top 10 trained with a financial services portfolio2-4 years post-qualified experience in industry or auditInsurance, MGA or broader financial services backgroundHands-on experience preparing statutory accounts under FRS 102Working knowledge of the SFCR narrative structure and the regulatory reporting environmentExperience working through an external audit, ideally from both auditor and auditee sidesWorking knowledge of UK corporation tax, VAT and R&D tax creditsStrong technical writing - auditor-ready papers and clean disclosure proseAdvanced Excel; comfortable with large data sets and reconciliationsActive and curious user of AI tools in day-to-day workDesirableExposure to a multi-entity group structure, including offshore (Gibraltar / Guernsey) or European subsidiariesFamiliarity with FCA RMAR / RegData and GFSC returnsPython, SQL or Snowflake skillsExperience working in a fast-growth, scale-up or fintech / insurtech environmentHow We WorkWe believe that teams work better when they have time to collaborate and space to get things done. We build and scale data-driven, impactful solutions that enable Zego to offer competitive and personalised insurance. Working in a fast-paced Agile environment, our team thrives on innovation, cross-functional collaboration, and driving measurable outcomes. We’re building a product organisation where AI isn’t a buzzword - it’s how we work. You’ll own strategic workstreams that span multiple teams and business domains, defining the 6-12 month product direction and shaping how Zego’s products evolve to meet ambitious commercial targets. This role sits at the intersection of strategy, execution, and leadership. You’ll define new product mechanics and revenue models. You’ll make build-vs-buy-vs-partner recommendations that shape Zego’s competitive position. Significant experience leading product strategy across multiple teams or domains in a high-growth environment, with decisions that moved business-level metrics.Experiment-first operator. Deep understanding of unit economics, pricing levers and revenue modelling, and credible with Finance and Leadership on P&L-level decisions.Data mastery. You design the metrics and dashboards the business relies on, and you are as comfortable in Snowflake as you are in a strategy review.Technical depth. Comfortable engaging engineers on system architecture, APIs and ML pipelines, enough to make informed strategic bets. You work AI-first. You will use AI daily here, and we mean daily. You do not need to arrive an expert, but you do need to arrive curious, experiment fast, and take ownership of getting good quickly. DescriptionAbout ZegoInsurance hasn’t changed much in over a century. The way we live, work and travel has.Good drivers are the entire point of Zego. Seven in 10 drivers on the road are consistently good, but until telematics came along there was no way to prove it, so nearly everyone paid a price based on averages. Zego is the company built to change that. At Zego, we’re leading the AI evolution in insurance. We move fast, without the layers that usually slow things down. AI takes the routine work off every team, from Finance to Product to Marketing, so people ship real code and launch custom dashboards in minutes. Engineering commits are entirely AI-assisted, which shifts the focus from team size to the quality of your thinking, and our data warehouse connects directly to an AI assistant for instant answers. Backed by a modern tech stack (Claude Code, Snowflake, Figma and Zapier) and a commitment to adopting new tools in days rather than quarters, you get complete ownership to do the most impactful work of your career. Purpose of the roleZego has recorded over a billion miles of real-world driving, captured from phone sensors (accelerometer, GPS and more) across tens of thousands of policies and four very different kinds of driving: private car, van, taxi and delivery. The Telematics team uses digital signal processing and machine learning to turn that raw signal into a precise picture of how people actually drive. We use it to price insurance more fairly, to help drivers be safer on the road, and to power Zego Rewards, everyday rewards for good driving that turn car insurance into an engaging product rather than a box to tick.We own the full telematics stack (mobile SDK, on-device ML, cloud pipeline) and the full pricing stack. So we can link driving behaviour directly to claim type, frequency and severity, and feed one system's predictions straight into the other. We are one of very few companies that owns that entire loop end to end, on in-house proprietary technology. As Head of Telematics Data Science you will set the research agenda and own the technical direction of that work, reporting to the Director of Data. You will lead three data scientists directly and three ML engineers with a dotted line to you. The split is roughly 60% leading, 40% hands-on.Our long-term ambition is driving behaviour modelling that holds up across countries and handsets, is highly predictive of claims risk, and is deeply integrated with driver coaching so we can offer the fairest price and the best experience to good drivers anywhere. Our partnership with Sompo Holdings, one of Japan's largest insurance groups, will take models trained on UK roads into an entirely different market. The problems you will be working onContinuously pushing the predictive power of our existing algorithms and ML modelsTelling drivers apart from passengers using sensor data aloneDetecting crashes and estimating their severityBringing map and road-context data into our models in a way that genuinely improves predictionHandling handset and sensor heterogeneity, so a model behaves consistently on a five-year-old Android and a new iPhoneOn-device ML under real battery and compute constraints - trip detection already runs on the phone, and more couldMaking behavioural risk models transfer to new markets, starting with JapanSeveral of these are open problems across the industry, not just at Zego. What you will be doingDefine and drive the technical roadmap, making sure the team is working on the highest-impact problemsLead the development of novel models to detect human behaviour and vehicle kinematics from high-frequency phone sensor data, on-device and in the cloudAct as the primary technical authority on telematics across the business, advising on existing products, surfacing patterns nobody has thought to look for, and identifying new value propositionsBuild, grow and mentor the team, setting the technical standards needed to produce exceptional workPartner with Pricing to integrate telematics predictions into how we price risk, and with Data Products and Engineering to embed telematics insight into Zego's core productsPush our use of AI in the work itself in analytics, in model development, and in the driver coaching experiences we are buildingRepresent our telematics science to senior leadership, commercial teams and partners including SompoOwn the metrics that track real-world model impact in production, and make sure our models meet our obligations around fair pricing when a model influences what someone pays, the fairness of that model is part of the jobRequirementsWhat you will need to be successfulA Master's or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related quantitative field though we are equally happy to talk to people with equivalent industry research experienceDeep expertise in machine learning and deep learning, preferably with hands-on experience building and deploying models on high-frequency time-series sensor dataA strong grounding in signal processing: signal modelling, decomposition, transforms and sensor physicsExperience leading and growing a data science team developing people and delivering through others, without losing touch with the technical workStrong software engineering practice: Python, version control, reproducible pipelines and production-ready codeExperience with large-scale data processing (we use Kafka, Spark and Flink)The ability to explain complex technical work clearly to senior leadership, commercial teams and partners, and a bias for connecting research to business outcomesPreferably, experience with on-device or embedded ML under compute and power constraintsFamiliarity with regulated environments, or with fairness and bias in applied models, is a plusYou work AI-first.
