    Research Institute

    MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

    Research Institute / Unit Information

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology and has played an important role in the development of many new techniques, most notably protein crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, DNA sequencing and monoclonal antibodies. The LMB has a clear goal of understanding biological processes at the molecular level, with the ultimate aim of using this knowledge to tackle specific problems in human health and disease. We aim to tackle difficult, long-term problems, which often require investment over many years.

There are four scientific Divisions - Structural Studies, Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry, Cell Biology and Neurobiology. However, scientific collaboration between the different Divisions is extensive. Scientists are well supported by excellent scientific facilities and by the LMB Operations Group which maintains the core infrastructure and services of the institute.

The LMB provides an unsurpassed environment for both new and established researchers. Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, thus creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation.

UK Research and Innovation is a new entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, more information can be found at www.ukri.org

    Job Description

    Team Science:

The MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) is proud to launch its new Team Science initiative, marking a bold step toward a more collaborative, challenge-driven model of research.

Scientific breakthroughs are often portrayed as the work of lone geniuses, but in reality, they are usually the result of collective effort. A Team Science project is not just bigger or multi-part, it's fundamentally different in its ethos and operational model. It's designed to foster true collaboration across disciplines, academic institutions, industry and the public, creating something that could not be achieved alone. It's about collective ambition, shared infrastructure and interdisciplinary innovation.

This new approach places collaboration and real-world impact at its core, integrating insights from across the LMS' existing expertise and diverse perspectives.

    Overall purpose:

A new exciting opportunity has arisen for a 3 Year Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the Reproductive Health and Fertility: Ageing, Sex and the Environment Team science project led by J Vaquerizas, E Martinez-Perez, and P Hajkova. Reproductive health is an important aspect of human wellbeing, yet infertility affects approximately one in six people globally. Despite its prevalence and significant emotional, societal and economic impact, the biological mechanisms underlying infertility and reproductive ageing remain poorly understood. We have put together a team of internationally-leading experts in germline biology and genome function that will use transdisciplinary experimental approaches to understand how intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence female and male fertility and reproductive ageing.

We are looking for a talented and self-motivated computational biologist with an interest in reproductive biology and genome function to join the Reproductive Health and Fertility: Ageing, Sex and the Environment Team science initiative as a postdoctoral researcher . The main goal of the project will be to analyse and integrate multimodal genome-wide datasets to build predictive models of healthy reproductive processes and investigate how these are perturbed in infertility and ageing. The candidate will work closely with other postdocs and students in the Team who will use omics and imaging approaches to elucidate the genetic and molecular causes of infertility, the impact of aging in male and female fertility, and the effect of metabolism and germline-soma crosstalk on fertility.

    Main duties / key responsibilities:
Design, plan, and conduct high-quality, independent research aligned with the project aimsCritically analyse, interpret, and present experimental data with scientific rigor and reproducibilityStay current with relevant scientific literature and integrate new findings and methodologies into ongoing researchCollaborate effectively with internal lab and Team members and external partners, including participation in interdisciplinary projectsProvide training and advice for other group members including PhD studentsWrite-up and publish results in high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journalsTake an active part in the academic activities of the LMSAttend and contribute to lab meetings, journal clubs and seminar presentationsPresent data at national and international meetings (where and when appropriate)Form good working relationships with other members of the group as well as internal and external collaborators

The postdoctoral researcher will join a multi-disciplinary team working on a multi-lab team science initiative aimed at understanding and modulating cytosolic nucleic acid sensing pathways involved in chronic inflammation and ageing ("inflammageing"). The successful candidate will integrate advanced single-molecule biophysics, protein biochemistry, chromatin biology, and translational pharmacology to deliver key mechanistic and therapeutic insights.

The postholder will employ optical tweezers combined with fluorescence imaging to directly visualise nucleic acid sensor interactions with DNA and RNA substrates under applied force. These real-time, quantitative analyses will reveal how sensors such as cGAS, AIM2, RIG-I, MDA5, and TLR9 are modulated by nucleic acid structure, chromatin context, and post-translational modifications.

Alongside this, the postdoc will take a leading role in the design and development of biochemical assays for high-throughput drug screening. In collaboration with the LMS/Imperial Drug Discovery Hub (DDHub), they will execute compound screens to identify inhibitors, activators, and degraders of key nucleic acid sensors, followed by mechanistic validation using biophysical and biochemical platforms. This position sits at the interface of fundamental research and therapeutic discovery.

    Main duties / key responsibilities:
Design and execute molecular cloning, protein expression, and purification strategies for recombinant nucleic acid sensorsPlan and conduct optical tweezer-based single-molecule assays to characterise DNA/RNA sensor dynamicsDevelop and optimise in vitro assays (e.g. fluorescence-based, enzymatic, binding) for use in compound screeningWork with DDHub to perform high-throughput screening for small-molecule modulatorsAnalyse screening data and characterise compound hits using biochemical, biophysical, and structural techniquesCollaborate with other scientists to validate compounds in cellular models of senescence and ageingProvide training and support to junior lab members, including PhD students.Participate in regular lab meetings, journal clubs, and institute seminars.Write scientific papers and present findings at national and international conferences.Take an active part in the academic activities of the LMSForm good working relationships with other members of LMS groups as well as internal and external collaborators
