You will be responsible for the strategic and operational management of the Microbiology Laboratory, driving service development, maintaining UKAS accreditation, and leading a skilled, motivated team. Working closely with clinicians, scientists, and partner organisations, you will play a pivotal role in delivering timely and accurate diagnostics that directly impact patient treatment and outcomes.

Main duties of the job The post holder will be responsible for the direction and operational management of the Medical Microbiology laboratory, staff (20) and budgets (£2.14 million), ensuring appropriate and cost-effective purchasing arrangements for equipment and materials, and the recruitment of and delivery of training to BMS and other staff within the Department to ensure continuity of service at all times. The post holder has a specific role in relation to infection prevention and control with a requirement to deliver services in conformance with government targets for investigating and reporting key organisms. Detailed job description and main responsibilities • Responsible for the efficient and effective management, organisation and development of Microbiology. To work in an efficient and timely manner and to be adaptable to change.
• To provide clear and effective leadership of the service and staff, with a focus on patient care, at all times
• Authorises requisitions and purchases and is an authorised signatory for financial payments as the budget holder for the department. Responsible for budgetary control.
About you:
• HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist (or equivalent qualification)
• Significant senior experience in microbiology laboratory management
• Strong knowledge of quality management systems and accreditation processes
