To quote TNC staff members, “you’ll join for our mission, and you’ll stay for our people.” WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER The Public Funding Manager will play an instrumental role within a dynamic team of professionals working together to deliver public funding needed for highly impactful conservation projects around the world that benefit people, nature and climate goals, including across Africa, Latin America, Asia Pacific and the Caribbean. The Public Funding Manager is primarily responsible for managing the development and submission of high-quality project proposal applications to European public funding agencies that support TNC’s Shared Conservation Agenda programs in Europe and globally. The successful candidate will work with both conservation delivery and policy teams from around the TNC global network to ensure that funding proposals are crafted in a clear and compelling manner, communicate the technical and scientific nature of TNC’s global programs and meet the requirements of European public funders, including for gender equity and social inclusion, financial rigour, and convincing theories of change. Excellent writing, analytical and research skills are essential, as is the ability to collaborate well with diverse teams and deliver through others. She/he/they will help to develop strategic partnerships with relevant European public funding agencies, conservation organizations, and other partners, to deliver long-lasting results across all TNC’s , including initiatives that help to: tackle climate change; support sustainable food systems; conserve precious habitats and ecosystems; deliver innovative approaches for financing nature and climate; empower Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities; and ultimately protect the lands and water upon which all life depends. WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU We are looking for self-motivated, detail oriented, and highly organized candidates who have experience developing public partnerships, managing public sector funding processes, and working in business development teams. The successful candidate will serve as team lead or team member for public funding development projects, depending on the proposal. She/he/they therefore must have experience preparing public funding proposals, including drafting technical text, budgets, theories of change, and log frames. A solid understanding of budgets as they relate to grant proposals is necessary. You will have a good understanding of the policy and funding priorities of target public funding agencies/departments, including both technical requirements and broader cross-cutting themes such as gender equity and social inclusion, safeguarding, and Overseas Development Assistance criteria. You will manage (or establish when needed) critical tracking tools which are essential to building and maintaining strong public sector partnerships, including an information database for proposals, an opportunity pipeline, a calendar of submissions and other deadlines, and an overview of how project teams are delivering to public funders’ delivery milestones. You will also advise colleagues on European public funding opportunities and requirements, conducting public funding research as necessary, to develop and maintain a solid understanding of relevant trends and developments. You have the ability to prioritize projects to keep multiple projects moving in a timely manner, meet deadlines and manage supplemental material required for proposals. You are able to gather and synthesize information and communicate in a convincing and succinct form. You enjoy building and facilitating internal networks and cross-team collaboration, coordinating other colleagues’ inputs towards shared end goals. You possess the ability to communicate sensitively with a diverse range of colleagues and partners from different cultures and backgrounds. This is one of two Public Funding Manager roles we are currently hiring for – this position focuses on public sector funding opportunities within the UK, France, and from EU institutions, therefore prior experience working in these markets will be advantageous. The accompanying position focuses on public sector funding opportunities within Germany and German-speaking countries, as well as from the Nordic region. The Corporate Engagement Advisor, Finance and Investors sits within the Corporate Engagement Business Unit, one of the three units comprising the Impact Finance and Markets Division. The Nature Conservancy’s Zero Conversion Commodities team has been working for decades with companies across the food and agriculture sectors to eliminate deforestation and conversion of natural vegetation in supply chains. At the same time, global institutional investors, asset managers and banks are increasingly working with their clients and portfolio companies to address deforestation and conversion risks and to expand investment in sectoral transitions. TNC is in the process of deepening our engagement with these financial institutions, the forums that support them, and other NGOs to better share TNC’s knowledge and insights with these stakeholders and to accelerate action. This position will initially support our Zero Conversion Commodity Strategy through engagement with the finance sector, key investor and banking forums, and other NGOs to drive awareness, support engagement strategies with key private sector companies in critical commodity value chains, and to expand investment in the decarbonization of food production. The scope of the role could expand to include support for other conservation strategies and priorities. The Senior Advisor, Investor Engagement will report to the Managing Director, Corporate Engagement. They will advise Corporate Engagement strategy development with the finance and investment sectors while supporting TNC’s Zero Conversion Commodities team in eliminating deforestation and land conversion in supply chains. WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU The Senior Advisor Investor Engagement develops and implements a strategic framework to engage with and influence asset owners, asset managers, and banks; investor and banking forums; and other NGOs related to our Zero Conversion Commodity goals and other environmental topics over time. Duties include strategy development for engaging the sector, project and program management and implementation, and regular contact with financial institution representatives and forums. RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE Manages finance sector and investor influence strategy development and execution in partnership with the Zero Conversion Commodities Strategy and other global and regional BUs. Builds and manages relationships with senior level staff of investor and banking forums, target financial institutions, and NGO partners. Supports Managing Director, Corporate Engagement and the Global Head of Impact Finance and Markets in their engagement with senior executives of forums, financial institutions, and NGOs. Collaborates closely with Zero Conversion Commodity team to identify target companies, goals and messaging, and to coordinate ZCC team interactions with key forums, financial institutions, and NGOs. Develops and administers departmental budget and has authority to modify budget based on changing circumstances. Operates within budget guidelines to ensure sound financial performance. Leads internal coordination and communication on activities with the finance sectors, across Conservancy regions and programs. Serves as a program manager and coordinates the work of others for assigned projects. Serve as SME for investor engagement and support of teams working with financial industry. Travel is expected up to 20% of the time. WHAT YOU'LL BRING Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy, business or related field and 6 years of senior management level experience in government relations, corporate sector, or equivalent combination of education/experience. Demonstrated experience building strong relationships across a matrixed organization and with external partners. Proven negotiation, communication, and presentation skills with corporate executives, board members, and government officials. Outstanding analytical and project management capabilities. The Director’s role is to source, structure, and close potential impact investment opportunities with a particular focus on fixed income products that generate priority conservation outcomes and financial returns that are competitive with other comparable market offerings. The Director will seek to co-create these transactions with financial institutions, corporate partners, asset managers, and conservation and investment experts (including Nature Conservancy colleagues). The Director will be primarily responsible for transaction structuring, negotiation, and execution, and, where necessary, will play an active role in investor engagement and fundraising alongside NatureVest’s capital raising team.
