Full time, fixed term one year Salary: £34,727 - £50,093 (dependent on experience)
Do you spark a sense of wonder about our planet? We’re searching for an enthusiastic Geography Teacher to join our vibrant team on a fixed-term basis from January 2026 until July 2026. You’ll plan and deliver inspiring lessons for pupils aged 11–18, encouraging them to question, explore and deepen their understanding of the world around them. You’ll play a key role in creating a supportive learning atmosphere, building pupils’ confidence and curiosity, and forming strong, positive relationships with colleagues, pupils and parents alike. The Geography department Geography is a vibrant and popular subject at GSAL. The department is a cohesive team of committed enthusiasts, consisting of eight specialist Geographers. We deploy a variety of engaging and varied teaching styles, so that our pupils feel stretched and inspired. The department is very well resourced, with seven modern specialist teaching rooms, each equipped with audio-visual equipment and interactive whiteboards. Geography is taken by all pupils up to Year 9. At GCSE it is an options subject and the numbers are high. In the Sixth Form there are currently five A level sets with over fifty pupils. Academic results are excellent and last year 72% passed A-level at grade A*or A. In recent years the numbers of pupils going on to study geography related degrees has flourished. The departmental schemes of work go beyond the requirements of both the National Curriculum and public examinations and seek to stretch and challenge pupils at all levels, often with an enquiry-based approach to the subject. We aim to teach a course that we feel appropriate to the particular needs of our pupils. There is plenty of opportunity for staff to incorporate their own areas of interest and expertise. Topicality is vital and our teaching reflects the current and interesting developments available to the subject. Curricular field work is a core part of our activities and is all departmentally run. There are trips and activities across all three key stages. At A level we have an established overseas residential field course which in recent years has been based in Switzerland. About GSAL The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) was awarded North Independent School of the Year 2024 and Independent School of the Decade in 2021. The school continues to be a friendly, fun and supportive environment with high investment in pupil and colleague wellbeing, while insisting upon and maintaining high expectations. ‘Be inspired’ is the ethos behind our teaching and learning at GSAL. We nurture all our pupils to make the most of their talents, realise their potential and develop into confident young people ready to rise to any challenge. These values have been at the heart of our school life for over four centuries. GSAL provides a high quality independent education for 2,100 boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 18. The main school campus at Alwoodley Gates in north Leeds was purpose built for Leeds Grammar School, which relocated in 1997 from the city centre. GSAL is academically selective, with consistently excellent A-level and GCSE results. After merger, the school introduced the diamond model of teaching, through which boys and girls learn together up to age 11, then in single sex classes between Year 7 and Year 11, and come together again in sixth form lessons. Form time and extracurricular activities are mixed throughout. Class sizes are usually between 16 and 22. Academic achievement is at the heart of a rounded education at GSAL, which offers our pupils personal development opportunities and broad experience beyond the classroom. With superb facilities available in school, pupils can take part in sport, music, drama, scouts, CCF, Duke of Edinburgh, debating and much more. We offer an outdoor learning programme and a wide variety of trips at home and abroad. Our lively house system encourages pupils to get involved and have fun. This success can only be achieved with committed, professional and well-qualified colleagues who are focused upon excellence in the classroom and contributions to the wider life of the school.
