    STEP is a bold and ambitious programme, and we are developing pioneering new technologies in order to achieve the goal.  We are generating considerable intellectual property which we will use to inspire and enable the fusion industry, strengthening the UK’s leadership in the industry.As the programme progresses and our whole plant partners come on board, you will have responsibility for leading on a range of intellectual property matters generated by one of the STEP technology streams.The role involves identifying, protecting and managing IP generated by the STEP technology stream, performing landscape and risk analysis, and advising the technology and engineering teams on all aspects of intellectual property.Key AccountabilitiesClient CounsellingAdvise technologists and engineers on IP matters.Ensure that IP decisions are made in alignment with the IP strategy, always leading to best for programme outcomes.Develop collaborative relationships with technical and engineering teams.Act as the go-to person for the specific technology stream.Identifying & Protecting InnovationEngage with project teams to support the identification of potentially protectable intellectual property.Advise on protection options aligned with the IP strategy.Support the capture of intellectual property and records in the IP register.Determine patentability of protectable inventionsDraft and prosecute patent applications and/or engage with external counsel to support the drafting and prosecution of patent applications.Identify suitable IP commercialisation opportunities and engage the innovation technology transfer team to enable and drive commercialisation of the IP assets.Produce IP register report documenting and communicating IP portfolio growth, value, and commercialisation opportunities.Landscape & Risk Analysis and ManagementPerform landscape and freedom to operate searching or engage with external expert search services to achieve same.Review and assess landscape search results, prioritising, and mapping relevance, and communicating the results to the technology workstream.Identify intellectual property risk, analyse potential impact on the programme and generate a freedom to operate opinion with support of external counsel where necessary.Communicate potential IP risk and management strategy with stakeholders.IP Portfolio ManagementDevelop an annual IP portfolio management process, set and agree KPIs with technology workstream stakeholders.Define and control an annual technology stream IP budget.Manage the intellectual property portfolio in alignment with the IP and technology transfer strategy, always leading to best for programme outcomes.IP TrainingPrepare and deliver a suit of IP training materials suitable for different levels of experience with the technology workstream.Respond to additional IP training requests, as necessary.Manage IP training register.The above is not intended to be an exhaustive list of activities and you may be required to undertake other reasonable tasks or duties requested.
    Qualifications

    Essential:Patent Attorney UK and/or European qualified with PQE.Proven experience advising clients (technologists and engineers) and managing intellectual property matters.Demonstrable experience in invention identification and capture, prior art review and assessment.Extensive patent drafting and prosecution experience.Experience managing an IP portfolio ensuring alignment to the IP strategy, generating breadth, and controlling cost; producing concise, informative reports for stakeholders.Experience working as the IP expert in a matrix and project-based environment, and with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.The ability to build, collaborate and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, ranging from technical to executive.Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.Effective written and verbal communication skills, priority setting and attention to detail.Strong technical background with a degree in Scientific or Engineering disciplineDesirableExperience managing IP matters in an industry setting.IP risk assessment, freedom to operate analysis and opinion generation.High quality Prior art, landscape and freedom to operate searching.

    The Role:The Head of Engineering Function is a core role in the senior leadership of UKIFS.  You will be leading a team of 10-12, with a budget of circa £1M and indirectly leading a larger team of strategic and whole plant partners to oversee all Engineering Functional support to the UKIFS organisation and STEP programme.  You will own and set the functional direction of the programme within the framework of a systems engineering approach by maintaining and evolving the engineering strategy and taking responsibility for driving a culture of continuous improvement.The Head of Engineering Function is accountable to the Director of Engineering Programme for all elements of Engineering Capability (People, Tools, Data, and Functional Services). You will work a across all the four engineering dominated IPTs (Tokamak Machine, Power & Cooling, Fuel Cycle, Tokamak Complex) and the Design Authority to enable Engineers to deliver. As UKIFS is Design Authority for STEP, you will manage a significant portfolio of technical risk, ensuring the Engineering organisation has the right capabilities, and is properly equipped and resourced at the right time to deliver a first of a kind fusion power plant. As many systems currently have low technical readiness you must evolve the function, in-line with the plant design, to ensure Engineering needs are met – and risks are mitigated – proportionate to the phase of the engineering lifecycle.Finally, you will work with the PM team to oversee and validate progress to plan.Establishing a fusion company in the UK is pioneering work. You'll thrive in this role if you can embrace uncertainty and ambiguity whilst simultaneously creating strong relationships as we build UKIFS and its team.     Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Essential: A recognised degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. business, data, public policy, engineering, or similar). A professional programme management qualification (e.g. MSP, MoP, PRINCE2, APM PMQ or equivalent). Significant leadership experience in governance, board management, and strategic reporting within large-scale, complex, multi-stakeholder programme environments. Proven ability to operate confidently at Board and Executive levels, shaping high-impact agendas and influencing strategic decision-making. Strong track record in designing and implementing reporting frameworks, dashboards, and performance management systems. Demonstrable experience in data analysis, business intelligence, and insight generation, with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights. Proficiency in Power BI, Tableau, Excel, and other data management and visualisation tools. Deep understanding of programme governance, public sector assurance frameworks (e.g. Treasury Green Book, NISTA), and reporting best practices. Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with experience working across government, industry, and regulated sectors. Demonstrable experience of building, leading, and developing high-performing teams. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence both technical and non-technical audiences. Beneficial: Experience in major government programmes, infrastructure delivery, or science/technology-led environments (e.g. energy, R&D, aerospace, or defence). Familiarity with Cabinet Office, HM Treasury, and sponsor department (e.g. DESNZ) governance, investment, and assurance processes. Exposure to statistical analysis, predictive modelling, or advanced data analytics techniques. Experience automating reporting workflows and optimising reporting tools for efficiency and impact. Experience operating within or supporting a new or transitioning organisation (e.g. ALB, JV, start-up). Knowledge of fusion, nuclear, or complex scientific/engineering programme.
