The role
SSEN Transmission are seeking a Senior Manager – System Optimisation to spearhead the development and implementation of strategies that optimise the delivery of the transmission network, ensuring economic efficiency, system reliability, and compliance with industry standards. In this role you will facilitate a team that drives innovation in power system modelling, constraint management, and digital transformation to support the transition to a low-carbon energy system.
You will
Maintain strong awareness of policy, industry, technology, market, and global factors impacting SSEN Transmission by consulting with stakeholders (such as internal teams, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), the National Electricity System Operator (NESO), Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), and Transmission Operators (TOs)), and recommend changes as needed.
Develop and manage optimisation frameworks for network topology, energisation sequencing, and constraint management, while pioneering advanced power system studies using tools like PSS®E (Power System Simulator for Engineering) and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
Build and maintain network models to forecast constraint costs, assess operability, and produce reports on optimisation interventions, curtailment impacts, and system performance.
Supporting the use of automation and data analytics to enhance optimization processes and improve network efficiency.
Ensure compliance with the Network Planning Framework (NPF), Security and Quality of Supply Standard (SQSS), System Operator Transmission Owner Code (STC), and other regulatory codes and standards.
You have:
A degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant field, with proven experience developing teams to deliver complex, high-quality outcomes within the electricity networks sector.
Expertise in progressing techno-economic assessments and constraint management strategies, with the confidence to identify assumptions and recommend robust investment cases for the network.
Current knowledge of the UK electricity industry, the opportunities on the journey to Net Zero, and knowledge of the relevant codes and standards, statutory and license obligations, with the ability to develop strategies that ensure economic efficiency, system reliability, and regulatory compliance. The ability to facilitate such assessments, assess a broad range of options, and make recommendations on investment cases would be beneficial.
A background in power system modeling and analysis, with proficiency in using data analytics and automation (Python, and APIs) to drive innovation in network outage planning and operational efficiency.
Outstanding communication skills, with demonstrable experience of building influential stakeholder relationships and ensuring alignment with industry codes and standards (SQSS, STC) and license obligations.
