    Rolls-Royce has an excellent opportunity for a Methods Development Engineer to join our Submarines Business in Derby.

    As a methods development engineer, you will actively develop methods which increase the availability and safety of components in-service. This is done by leading the entire development life-cycle which includes:

    • Preliminary literature reviews to generate hypotheses
    • Physical testing to provide validation
    • Reporting and obtaining regulatory approval
    • Implementation of the developed methods as quality assured software

    The component methods team consists of engineering and software developers from a variety of backgrounds who work together within an agile framework to generate software and methods solutions to overcome some of the most challenging problems in the business.

    The application of these methods development activities are both structural integrity or thermal hydraulic, with the role offering opportunities in both fields.     Teams within plant performance undertake a wide range of thermal hydraulic analyses ranging from detailed predictions of heat transfer in individual components using 3D computational fluid dynamics so that their operational life can be accurately assessed, to 1D systems code models of an entire plant to predict overall performance and ensure its safe operation. This gives rise to a wide range of exciting and interesting workstreams involving fluid dynamics and heat transfer with important real world applications.

    Job Summary:

    Reporting to the Vice President - Marine & Governmental Business Unit and responsible for the day-to-day management and delivery of Land Defence Project activities within the UK.

    RRPS initiated various Land Defence activities with the supply of engines to British Army Ajax and Boxer programmes, which includes assembly, sales and support of mtu Land Defence products. Consequently, RRS-UK must implement appropriate mechanisms and activities to facilitate the efficient delivery and support of this product.

    Projects within other areas of the business may arise from time to time. Products include implementing and operating Project Governance, Controls and Reporting including Planning, Risks/Issues, Finance, Cost Control, Commercial and Change Management.

    Experience of effectively managing 3rd Party Suppliers and Contractors.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • To promote a zero harm culture by ensuring that all HSQE requirements are met with all work that is carried out by the team.
    • Ensure first class liaison, both internal and external including fulfilment of all reasonable requests.
    • Responsible for maintaining project targets and deliverables. Capable of providing commercial (costing, contractual, legal) and technical (mechanical, electrical, controls) expertise.
    • Project Management of Boxer Project as part of the wider UK Land Defence activities by identifying and managing multiple workstreams to deliver the Land Defence UK objectives.
    • Provide reporting at multiple levels on both commercial and technical topics as required by the management team.
    • Maintain excellent liaison with all internal and parent company departments and participate generally in all departmental activities.
    • Responsible for delivering on detailed contractual and technical specification documents, and assisting with preparing detailed project plans and designs encompassing legal, commercial, mechanical, electrical and controls solutions. Participate in the delivery of the technical and commercial risk analysis and develop as necessary.
    • Responsible for recommending preferred suppliers and subcontractors to engage following commercial and technical evaluation of proposals.

    Provide detailed instruction to contractors and suppliers of equipment or services required. Identify and interact with suppliers to ensure equipment supplied is technically suitable, value for money and delivered on time.

    • Full Boxer project P&L responsibility.
    • To undertake special duties and projects as required

    Person Profile:

    This position requires an enthusiastic person with good communication skills, able to work both independently and as part of a team when required. The applicant must be qualified / conversant with Rolls-Royce Security and Information Security requirements.

    The successful applicant will be required to travel within the UK & ROI as required and may on occasion be additionally required to spend time overseas. The job requires a disciplined individual who is capable of delivering / communicating the high standards expected of a blue chip company.

    Computer Skills - Computer literate with good keyboard skills. Proficient in MS Project, MS Office, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email.

    On the job training will be provided for SAP and other Rolls-Royce business systems.

    Driving Licence & Passport - Full and Clean Driving Licence, UK Passport Holder.

    Language - Must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

    Literacy and Numeracy - Must be a competent writer of business letters and emails. Must have strong background in high level data analysis and end to end processes.

    Qualifications - Must have:

    • Min 5 years of relevant experience in Customer Key Account Management and/or Programme Management. Relevant qualification or demonstrable industry experience would be advantageous.

    As an Experimental Test Strategy Engineer your primary responsibilities will include:

    • Developing, implementing, and managing long term roadmaps for specific areas (including thermal hydraulic, high-fidelity measurement, acoustic, component, shock, materials and secondary propulsion testing) and for both new and existing test facilities, including their delivery.

    • Act as the point of contact for incoming test requests from across the business, undertaking the initial key stakeholder engagement and requirements and ensuring it is integrated into the right area of Technical Development.

    Including capturing key testing requirements, owning the first stage of the test data acquisition tube map, shaping the key testing requirements, and leading the development and endorsement of the main testing options.

    • Engage with the broader Experimental Engineering Team, as well as rig operators and technicians in our on-site engineering laboratory to deliver a suite of experimental testing programmes as required.
    • Engage with external organisations and in research projects at our University Technology Centres, particularly in relation to fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and novel experimental measurement techniques.

    The EC&I Sub-system teams are responsible for the end-to-end design of the reactor C&I, integration, commissioning, power systems control and sensors. The lifecycle of design work ranges from product concept, detailed design, V&V, production and build and commissioning support. There are opportunities in various areas of the Sub-systems department and the successful candidates will be aligned to their strengths.

    The Sub-systems department interface with several internal and external teams such as supply chain support, manufacturing engineering support (IPT). Direct support is provided to the Barrow site office and the shipbuilder through build and commissioning documentation and issue resolution.
