This role sits within the Building Services team, with a primary focus on Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Ministry of Justice (MoJ) projects across the UK. The Role As a Senior / Principal Electrical Design Engineer, you will take a leading role in the delivery of electrical building services projects, providing technical expertise, managing project delivery and supporting the development of junior engineers. Working closely with the Associate team, you'll manage projects from initial feasibility through to completion while maintaining strong client relationships and ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality electrical designs. The successful candidate will work across a varied portfolio of property and construction projects, from complex developments valued between £1 million and £200 million to detailed assessments of existing structures. The position offers the opportunity to apply broad structural engineering expertise and make a meaningful contribution to the built environment. Based in the client’s Plymouth office, the role will support the delivery of a wide range of structural engineering services. Projects include major industrial and commercial schemes, education, healthcare and defence developments, as well as smaller bespoke commissions and structural surveys. The client operates across the UK and internationally, working with government and public-sector bodies, emergency services, schools and universities, contractors, developers and local authorities. Roles and Responsibilities Report to and take direction from the senior management personnel leading the structural engineering team. Report on financial performance of projects and resourcing requirements to the senior management team and assist in the management of team resources required to implement the commercial and business direction of the team. Act as lead or sole designer as appropriate to the size and complexity of the project, responsible for outline scheme through to detailed design and production of technical deliverables. Carry out structural analysis and design in accordance with Eurocode suite of design codes, ensuring designs are economic, sustainable, efficient and buildable. Oversee the production of detailed design drawings. Supervise and mentor junior engineers, technicians, and apprentices within the team, playing an active role in their future development. Undertake site visits during construction to resolve site queries, monitor progress and provide advice to contractors. Skills and Experience MEng/BEng recognised by the Engineering Council with extensive post-graduate experience in a field of structural engineering. Chartered (or near chartered) and a Member or Graduate Member of either the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English, including technical report writing skills. Demonstrable and sound experience in the design of structures in concrete, steel, masonry and timber. Experience with Finite Element Design (ideally using Robot Structural Analysis or SCIA Engineer). Experience with use of 2D and 3D structural design packages such as TEKLA Structural Designer, TEDDS, Masterseries etc. Experience working with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and within a 3D environment generally. Experience using AutoCAD and Revit beneficial, but not essential. Demonstrable experience working in projects of a varying size and complexity and familiarity with key forms of building construction. Demonstrable UK experience working in a ‘external facing’ role, undertaking surveys / inspections and in assisting contractors on site. Be a collaborative, confident and ambitious team player, who is also able to work with minimal supervision and use own initiative. Good commercial awareness and demonstrable experience in ‘project running’. Have experience of sustainability in design and implementing sustainable options in preparation of structural designs. The role will include: Delivering electrical building services designs from concept through to RIBA Stage 7 Producing electrical calculations, specifications, drawings, schedules and tender documentation Coordinating electrical designs with mechanical, energy and sustainability engineers Ensuring designs comply with BS 7671, Building Regulations Part L, BREEAM and relevant industry standards Attending client and design team meetings and representing the consultancy Preparing feasibility studies, budget cost estimates and technical reports Liaising with clients, contractors and other project stakeholders Undertaking site inspections and quality checks Preparing site inspection and quality reports Contributing to the delivery of practical, sustainable and low-energy electrical solutions Supporting the successful delivery of projects to agreed timescales and standards Requirements The successful Electrical Design Engineer will ideally have: 5+ years' experience within electrical building services design Strong technical knowledge of BS 7671 Experience with emergency lighting and fire alarm design Previous experience delivering electrical designs within a consultancy or contractor environment Ability to operate confidently in a senior and client-facing capacity HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline Competent user of AutoCAD Experience using recognised electrical design software Full UK driving licence Desirable experience includes: Revit MEP experience AutoCAD experience IET or CIBSE membership, or working towards membership Knowledge of SAP, SBEM, LZC reporting or low-carbon design Experience working on healthcare, public sector or complex commercial projects Working towards Chartered Engineer status Candidates who meet most, but not all, of the requirements are encouraged to apply.
