Location: Cardiff Rate: £500 per day Contract Length: Approximately 2 years IR35 Status: To be confirmed - Outside IR35 may be considered Start Date: As soon as possible Role Overview We are recruiting for an experienced Construction Engineering Manager to support the delivery of a major rail infrastructure programme in Cardiff. This is a long-term contract opportunity, created due to the current postholder moving on. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the engineering assurance and coordination of civil engineering works across the programme, with a particular focus on track interfaces and public realm construction. The role would suit a CEM with a strong civil engineering background who has previously worked on complex multidisciplinary rail projects. Key Responsibilities Provide construction engineering leadership across civil, track and public realm work packages. Coordinate interfaces between track, civils, highways, utilities, drainage and public realm activities. Maintain compliance with Network Rail standards, project procedures and relevant CDM requirements. Provide technical input into meetings, progress reviews and stakeholder discussions. Essential Experience Previous experience working as a CEM Strong civil engineering background within the rail industry. Experience delivering complex rail infrastructure or multidisciplinary construction projects. Good understanding of track construction and its interfaces with civil engineering works. Experience overseeing public realm, highways, drainage, utilities or urban infrastructure works. Desirable Experience Experience delivering station, light rail, metro or city-centre rail infrastructure. Key Responsibilities Capture, analyse and manage customer requirements Develop and specify system and product requirements Produce system and subsystem designs and technical specifications Manage technical interfaces between ETCS systems, train design authorities and internal/external design teams Capture and validate train data Produce and manage ETCS configuration data Support system integration activities and subsystem integration Analyse and evaluate technical solutions Work within configuration management and change control processes Support configuration and continuous improvement of integration test rigs Produce estimates for systems engineering activities Provide regular progress reporting to project stakeholders Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and engineering best practice Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and developments within ETCS and railway systems Support personal and professional development towards recognised engineering accreditation About You Essential qualifications and skills: Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Science or a related technical discipline Strong knowledge of ETCS products and on‑board systems Experience of ETCS product data and configuration processes Excellent understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle Proven experience working within the UK rail industry Experience working to industry quality and safety standards Knowledge of railway technologies and their practical application Experience applying railway and ETCS standards Ability to manage technical interfaces across multidisciplinary teams Strong communication and stakeholder management skills Desirable qualifications: Experience working with safety‑critical systems Understanding of project delivery methodologies Experience contributing to process improvement initiatives Location This role is primarily based at the client’s Derby site, with occasional travel to Chippenham as required.
