Our client is part of a group that has been established for almost 200 years and employs more than 5,500 staff globally and specialise in a range of bespoke heavier engineering and materials handling activities for a diverse range of applications. Due to the approaching retirement of a long-established and valued member of the team, they are now seeking to recruit an experienced and self-motivated Engineering Manager to be based out of their prestigious Leeds Office environment and covering other depots and offices as required. The Engineering Manager is responsible for the successful Design Office based in Leeds, leading and co-ordinating all engineering activities across the company, including mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines, with the role ensuring engineering solutions support business objectives, customer requirements, and regulatory standards, with the Engineering Manager providing strategic direction, technical leadership, and operational oversight to deliver high-quality, compliant, and cost-effective engineering outcomes across projects, products, and services. Reporting to the Business Manager, core responsibilities for this role include (but are not limited to): • Leading and managing the mechanical, electrical and software engineering personnel ensuring alignment with company strategy and objectives. • Managing engineering resources (including contract staff), workloads, and priorities to meet project timelines and business demands. • Managing and supporting the process of continuous product improvement with respect to cost, delivery time, product performance, etc. and new product development. • Ensuring appropriate engineering involvement in the business winning projects teams for proposal preparation and sales, providing technical oversight for new product development, modifications, upgrades and lifecycle support, and ensuring engineering deliverables meet customer, quality, safety and regulatory requirements. • Preparing the business unit engineering strategy, as well as preparing and implementing plans for engineering skills development, contract staff utilisation, the allocation of staff to projects and for personnel development and recruitment. • Overseeing configuration management, design control and change management processes and ensuring there exists adequate communication between the engineering department and other functional departments. • Attending inter-company and customer sites as required. To be considered for this genuinely exceptional opportunity, it is envisaged the successful candidate will be qualified to at least Degree level or above in a relevant Mechanical or Electrical Engineering discipline and ideally hold (or be working towards) Chartered status and hold membership of relevant professional bodies. Essentially you will demonstrate proven engineering management experience across multidisciplinary engineering teams, preferably gained within a mechanical handling environment, with significant mechanical engineering design experience and effective communication and influencing skills at all levels as well as a strong understanding of engineering lifecycle management, design assurance and compliance frameworks. The successful candidates will be tasked with developing detailed technical specifications for mechanical, pneumatic, and instrumentation equipment, as well as assisting in the procurement inspection of components for use in the manufacture of high-quality, critical automated processing systems for a range of industry sectors. Core responsibilities for this varied and challenging role will include (but not be limited to): • The detailed specification of all mechanical, pneumatic and electrical instrumentation equipment and components used within the portfolio of system solutions in collaboration with design engineers and project managers. • Undertaking meticulous reviews of project requirements and developing firm technical plans, designs and specifications, producing associated technical documents as required on projects and issuing drawings, specifications and other documents to suppliers for quoting and/or purchase. • Ensuring all items required for a project are specified, ordered and delivered on time • Coordinating factory activities as required, including weld tests, weld procedures, third party inspections in collaboration with QA management. • Monitoring supplier performance (OTIF, Quality, Cost Management and scalability etc) and reporting findings to QA management. • Communicating with customers, suppliers and others as required. • Working in accordance with the Company QMS as well as ensuring compliance at all times with relevant applicable regulations, laws and contractual obligations. It is envisaged the successful candidate will demonstrate a relevant engineering or technical Degree (ideally Mechanical, Electrical / Electronic or Process / Chemical Engineering) and realistically at least 5 years’ experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment. You will possess a high level of proficiency in the MS Suite of packages including TEAMS, PowerPoint and Word / Excel and the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team in an often fast paced and pressurised professional technical environment.
