    Position Summary

    This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Resident Assistant for the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University (OSU). The employee will assume the duties and responsibilities of a Resident Assistant and will help to support Hatfield Student Life activities, including but not limited to: preparing housing units, coordinating housing move-ins/outs, supporting daily housing operations, planning events and outreach materials, acting as a point of contact for housing residents, and driving motor pool vans for curricular and extra-curricular activities. Other duties include attending and supporting Hatfield community events, such as seminars, and actions to foster safe, inclusive student experiences.     Communication, Teamwork, Leadership, and Equity & Inclusion. Position Duties Community Development (60%) Support housing, curricular and extracurricular activities: Assist with after-hours and weekend resident arrivals and departures, as well as housing supported events.· Prepare apartments for incoming residents, which may include moving and carrying linen packets, moving and carrying dishes and cookware, moving furniture within an apartment, and doing minor cleaning tasks.· Complete Duty Logs and Room Condition Reports accurately and in a timely manner.· Submit maintenance requests· Assist with laundry room operation and schedule· Be accessible in campus housing during evening and weekend hours to ensure availability to residents.· Participate in term transitions, which may include a high volume of arrivals and departures, room checks, and campus tours.· Drive residents and students in university-owned 12- or 15-passenger vans for orientation, field trips and/or course-related activities. Execute and support community programming as directed by your supervisor, including but not limited to: Individual conversations with residents, hosting and executing community building events and activities, creating and posting bulletin boards, and creating and posting door decorations.· Work with your supervisor to determine your community needs to create and execute an action plan utilizing the community building tools.· Co-facilitate community orientations and meetings each term.· Promote, attend, and participate in programming HMSC campus programming including but not limited to weekly research seminars, Markham symposium, and Marine Science Day.· Support HMSC student programming, events and activities, including afterhours and weekend events· Assist with HMSC food pantry operations. Create and maintain strong positive relationships with the community, such as: Identify and facilitate connections and relationships between residents in the community.· Role model academic success and engagement through resident interactions. Promote academic initiatives in the community and refer residents to academic resources.· Promote and practice social justice values within the community and create a safe space for relationship building across differences. Identify and respond to resident needs through consultation and referral of campus resources. Support and promote health and wellness strategies for yourself and the residents in your community.
    Student Behavior and Crisis Management (10%)· Confront and report potential policy violations and behavior that is disruptive to the community to your supervisor. Role model behavior expected of students as outlined in the Student Conduct Code and HMSC Housing Policy Guide. Communicate expectations of appropriate behavior and University policy information to residents. Communicate any incidents and resident concerns to supervisor. Understand and implement emergency response protocol and procedures. Communicate and educate residents on safe practices and the appropriate action to take in the event of an emergency. Communicate with the professional staff member on call during crisis response. Refer residents to appropriate support services as needed. Serve on duty rotation to provide support to housing residents.

    Administration and Communications (30%) Attend and participate in regular meetings with your supervisor, monthly HMSC Safety Awareness Form and any other assigned meetings. Monitor Discord channel and disseminate information when appropriate. Check email at least twice a day and respond as requested. Participate in all trainings and orientations. Provide feedback in the appropriate time, place, or manner. Support facility tours, including compiling content for current and future tours· Support digital communications through compiling content about courses and other experiential learning such as internships.· Develop communications such as newsletters, flyers, etc. to promote share information and promote events. Complete other tasks as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Full Employment Eligibility Requirements can be found here:
    Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term* Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
    *International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications Be a current OSU student or degree partnership student with OSU with a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 or higher.     Under the supervision of the Boating Safety Officer (BSO), the Watercraft Safety Education Assistant contributes to the delivery and coordination of OSU’s Motorboat Operator Training Course (MOTC)—a required safety certification for faculty, staff, students, and research collaborators who operate small boats in support of education and research. This intermittent position is part of a qualified instructional pool that helps ensure training compliance and student-to-instructor ratio requirements are met during MOTC sessions.

    The Watercraft Safety Education Assistant plays a critical role in implementing hands-on, competency-based learning in classroom, field, and on-water settings. Working independently and in collaboration with the Small Boat Program (SBP) team, this position helps ensure the successful delivery, review, and improvement of watercraft safety instruction across diverse instructional sites and audiences.

Key Responsibilities The MOTCI works as a member of a team of Instructors to provide safe, reliable and inclusive access to the MOTC, a required safety training for OSU researchers, students and collaborators.

    Educational Delivery – 60% Deliver established curriculum for the Motorboat Operator Training Course in classroom, dockside, and on-water environments. Tailor instructional approaches to meet the needs of adult learners and OSU-affiliated research personnel. Reinforce key learning outcomes related to water safety, vessel handling, and environmental awareness. Assist with student assessment and skill demonstration requirements. Help create and revise teaching aids, checklists, and supplementary learning materials. Program Coordination and Support – 20% Prepare training materials, equipment, and safety gear prior to each session. Conduct post-course debriefs and recommend improvements to curriculum or delivery logistics. Collaborate with the Boating Safety Officer and other instructors to ensure consistency and alignment with university safety policies. Coordinate with faculty, staff, and field users to help schedule and accommodate training needs. Monitor participant engagement and training progress throughout each course session. Outreach and Engagement – 10% Promote water safety education and the Small Boat Program through interactions with faculty, researchers, and students. Help orient new small boat users to MOTC course requirements and expectations. Represent the program during public education events, water safety drills, or other university outreach efforts. Contribute to building an inclusive and safety-oriented learning environment for all participants. Records and Evaluation – 10% Track course participation and training completion using standardized forms and online tools. Collect informal feedback from course participants and identify areas for improvement. Submit required documentation to maintain university compliance and instructor qualification standards. Assist in maintaining accurate instructional logs and compliance records for audit purposes. What You Will Need Completion of the Motorboat Operator Instructor Training Course (MOITC) or equivalent. Documented experience participating in the instruction of at least one MOTC or equivalent course within the past 3 years, and one within the past 5 years. Demonstrated skill in teaching, training, or instructional delivery for adult learners. Demonstrated experience operating small boats in a range of environments. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of learners and colleagues. Familiarity with the maintenance and safe operation of small boats and equipment (e.g., outboard motors, trailers). Competence in using computers for communication, recordkeeping, and data entry. Ability to foster an inclusive learning environment and embrace a diverse set of ideas, perspectives and backgrounds. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess, and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. What We Would Like You to Have Certification as a “Lead Instructor” or “Course Administrator” from the Scientific Boating Safety Association (SBSA) or the U.S. Department of the Interior Watercraft Safety Program. Working Conditions / Work Schedule Regular outdoor work in a variety of field settings including rivers, bays, and offshore marine environments.
