Start time is between 6 and 7am, and you will normally work 7.5 hours per day, however there can be overtime if the route requires it or after delays. What you'll be doingYou will be driving a long wheelbase Mercedes Sprinter size van, typically carrying out three or four drops per day, and covering 200-250 miles per day. We are about to obtain our own van on lease hire from mid-2026. When delivering you may have to access the store with keys and deliver into a storeroom or shop – sometimes working on your own. Safety, professionalism and passion for our work sit at the heart of everything we do.What you'll be doingWorking across our woodlands, you’ll deliver a wide range of practical forestry tasks, including:•carrying out tree and woodland management such as thinning, felling and timber extraction•operating chainsaws, tractors, winches and other forestry machinery•contributing to planned and reactive work programmes, ensuring high standards at all times•supporting tree safety operations, felling roadside trees•maintaining machinery and equipment, reporting faults and ensuring safe use•carrying out repairs to boundaries such as dry stone walls and fencing•supervising volunteers on practical tasks, helping them work safely and confidentlyYou’ll play a key role in helping us care for our woodlands responsibly and sustainably, with a clear focus on safety, quality and the long‑term health of our forests.Who we're looking forApplications from redeployees are assessed against the minimum criteria for the role. In your application, please provide details of how you meet the minimum criteria below: Practical experience working in a woodland or countryside environment.A Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent vocational experience.Good understanding of woodland management and common silvicultural practices.Competence with forestry machinery and equipment (e.g. chainsaws, tractors, winches) with appropriate certification.Knowledge of timber extraction and the timber market environment.Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements and experience producing risk assessments.Ability to work safely and maintain high standards across all forestry operations.Good written and verbal communication skills.Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.Field identification skills and a demonstrable passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors.Additional criteria for all other applicantsExperience supporting and supervising volunteers.Flexibility and adaptability in a range of practical outdoor scenarios.Ability to make balanced decisions using initiative.Experience working with external contractors and tenants.Experience with boundary work (e.g. dry stone walling, fencing).Interest or experience in tree safety work.The packageThe National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart.
