For more information about our properties, visit .What you'll be doingYou’ll lead the day-to-day operations of the Flatford and North Essex cluster, including Flatford, Paycockes, Grange Barn and Bourne Mill, ensuring our places are welcoming, inclusive, safe and well run. You’ll line manage on-site teams covering Visitor Experience and Welcome, as well as Conservation teams working with gardens and collections. Working with colleagues across Countryside, Commercial, Facilities and Business Services, and Participation & Engagement, you’ll deliver positive visitor experiences while maintaining strong health and safety and operational standards. As a member of the Essex Portfolio Leadership Team, you’ll work with the General Manager and colleagues to contribute to estate-wide strategy, long-term planning and financial sustainability. You’ll also help shape how our places respond to change, including evolving visitor needs, conservation priorities, climate adaptation and access. You will also undertake onsite original timber repairs, including roofs, staircases and historic gates, install bespoke joinery and service repair historic windows and doors.This role will lead to level 3 Craft Carpentry & Joinery apprenticeship followed by a 12 months’ work placement.Further information on the Apprenticeship Standard here: What it's like to work hereOur Specialist Craft Centres have been created to develop a skilled workforce for the National Trust which demonstrates the highest levels of skills, promotes and preserves heritage building crafts, inspires people to take up traditional crafts skills and helps us to repair and conserve our special places, for everyone, for ever. We own and care for one of the largest, most varied and most significant collections of built structures in Europe. The greatest proportion of our 28,500 buildings and structures were constructed pre-1919 and these have high heritage value, with a range of uses – from offices to workshops, mansions to cottages. Our crafts people are an integral part of looking after our assets, using their skills to conserve and maintain our buildings and structures, and being part of creating a lasting legacy.Your training will be based at a specialist college and be delivered via a combination of day release and online learning, with all college expenses and travel paid. There will also be opportunities to travel to other National Trust locations with some overnight stays to expand your learning and experience. You will also be able to join other training events and learn from industry colleagues internally and externally.Based at our traditional Specialist Craft Centre within the grounds of Cotehele, you’ll be part of a team producing specialist joinery for historic places across the Southwest. This workshop plays a key role in caring for some of the region’s most significant heritage buildings, giving you the chance to work in settings rich with history and character.You’ll also work across a range of National Trust properties in Cornwall. Every building is unique, which means no two jobs are ever the same. You’ll learn something new on every project and develop a wide range of joinery and carpentry techniques to meet the varied challenges that come with conserving centuries old structures.From crafting diamond shaped window frames and bespoke oak joinery to carrying out sensitive conservation repairs on much loved properties, your work will help protect these remarkable places for generations to come.What you'll be doingYou’ll work closely with your Line Manager and Mentors on tasks directly linked to your apprenticeship, often outdoors and in all weathers, as part of a supportive and skilled team. You’ll take responsibility for your learning by preparing for review meetings and keeping your e portfolio up to date with evidence of your progress, including timesheets for off the job training.You’ll attend college as part of your apprenticeship, with travel expenses covered in line with Trust policy. It is a physically demanding, outdoor job that requires you to thrive in that environment. Strangford Lough is one of the most heavily designated nature conservation sites on the island of Ireland and is home to a wealth of wildlife interest and so you will need to have a genuine interest in and knowledge of natural history and ecology. Salary: £26,793 per annum Contract: Fixed Term Contract until 28-Mar-2026 Hours/working pattern: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week. Due to the nature of the role you will work weekends, bank holidays, evenings, and be on call. Due to the fact that a number of sites in the portfolio are islands, you will need to be comfortable working on and around water. Due to the nature of the role a full driving licence is essential. This role is required to work with vulnerable groups including children and any offer of employment or volunteering is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. What it's like to work here Working within the NI Nature Portfolio, you'll be helping to manage Strangford Lough, a site of international importance. This highly designated property is home to an array of waders and wildfowl, from breeding seabirds such as Common and Arctic Tern, to Brent Geese that overwinter here and as such, bird monitoring is a key part of the ranger teams work here. A large part of your work as a ranger here, will be spent on and around the water, working on power boats, carrying out habitat management on islands and seal counts on behalf of NIEA and moving livestock to and from islands with the Cuan Brig barge. Along with Strangford Lough, you will be covering Ards Peninsula, from Orlock in North Down, to Ballyquintin at the tip of the peninsula. Managing coastal paths, farmland and woodland along with engaging with the thousands of visitors who use our sites and balancing the need for access alongside nature conservation.
