    About the business division
    The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald's centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland's water and wastewater challenges. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations, preventing urban flooding, and improving the health of our rivers and coastal environments. Our multi-disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies to outline and detailed design. Together, we deliver best-in-class solutions to our clients while offering diverse and technically stimulating opportunities to our people.

    Overview of the role

    After recent framework successes, we have opportunities for Senior civil engineers (design engineers) in our Manchester and Liverpool offices within our multidisciplinary Water Consultancy Division. We work on a vast range of design projects covering, for example:
    Water treatment Water distribution Wastewater recycling Industrial process water Desalination Irrigation Hydropower Flood defence We cover all phases of the project lifecycle from feasibility studies through detailed design, construction support, and commissioning to handover. We provide specialist technical support to colleagues across our global business, offering fantastic opportunities to get involved in diverse and technically challenging work. Our clients include the majority of UK water utility companies, and many other governmental organisations and private companies in the UK and overseas.

    In this role you will be:
    Working across several different UK water authorities, with a main focus on United Utilities as a key client Working as part of multi-disciplinary design teams in project delivery Preparing design submissions to ensure compliance with contract requirements Undertaking studies, concept, preliminary and detailed design Interfacing and liaising with clients and other stakeholders
    You will work in close partnership with clients and contractors, building strong relationships that will enhance the company's reputation and help secure further work.

    Essential:

    You will play a pivotal role in delivering BIM and Digital outputs throughout the lifecycle of various projects. From concept design to commissioning, you will ensure that all BIM aspects are meticulously considered and integrated.

    The role of a BIM Technician includes:

    Delivering CAD/BIM design data and undertaking quality control processes and contributing to development of the CAD/BIM standards. Using 3D modelling to support design collaboration, clash resolution, asset data capture, digital rehearsal and cost capture. Supporting the development of the common data environment platform and process (Autodesk CC/ BIM 360). Creating and developing a standardised BIM element library, to support model reuse and a production approach, including identifying affordable and low carbon solutions. Taking responsibility for cyber security aspects associated with CAD/BIM data and access. Undertaking validation of CAD/BIM models from suppliers and integrating into our models. Working with designers to manage the competing tensions of time, cost and quality. Managing safety, wellbeing, environment and sustainability within your BIM/CAD output. Supporting the project teams understanding of BIM and supporting less experienced BIM technicians, providing technical and professional guidance to aid their development. What you'll need:

    Recognised qualification in Computer-aided design (CAD), BIM or related field. Proficiency in one or more Autodesk authoring packages (Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD). Experience with water, or wastewater, non-infrastructure or infrastructure projects. Experience in authoring 3D models in a common data environment platform (Autodesk Construction Cloud/BIM360).     Overview of the role

    Mott MacDonald is a market leader in the UK water sector, being a key supplier to major water companies and delivering a wide variety of engineering and advisory projects in support to the challenges faced by the sector. Our Water Consultancy Division has ambitious growth plans in line with AMP8 investment needs and we are proud of our strong reputation in the industry which is allowing us to expand our business. Having been appointed to a large UK water consultancy framework in 2024, we are looking for a Mechanical Discipline Lead to support the delivery of our water and wastewater programmes. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be the figure head for the Mechanical Engineering discipline within the framework. You will have the opportunity to steer the technical direction of discipline related activities, working closely with our Client and our other discipline leads. You will own the technical quality of the deliverables created by engineers/consultants and manage technical problem solving. You will also be expected to hold a key relationship with equivalent discipline leads for the client, leveraging this to help resolve technical issues and blockers.

    The scale of investment required in AMP8 is both a significant challenge but a major opportunity to provide a long-lasting legacy to our client and their region. It also requires new more efficient ways of delivering our services and for the successful candidate to demonstrate their ability to identify and implement innovations that maintain delivery to programme and commercial targets.

    Key elements of the role will include taking a lead on and managing the following activities:

    As a civil engineering degree apprentice your role is more than designing infrastructure - it's about creating resilient, sustainable solutions that improve lives and protect the planet.

    You will play a key role in designing and delivering the infrastructure that powers the UK's transition to Net Zero. With the growing demand for renewable energy, your work will help ensure clean energy reaches homes, businesses, and even international markets through interconnectors to Europe.

    You'll be working with a team of engineers who are involved in the design of critical infrastructure that supports the transmission of low-carbon energy across the UK. Depending on the project stage, your work will span: Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Detailed Design phases, Civil works design, including platforms (earthworks, embankments, retaining walls), access roads (temporary and permanent), and drainage systems (SuDS, Infodrainage) Structural design, covering foundations, beams, columns, and connections, feasibility studies and optioneering exercises to identify optimal solutions and site visits to assess conditions and support construction phases.

    This is an exciting senior leadership role with the opportunity to shape, develop and grow our Road Safety Team and contribute to achieving a high performing shared enterprise with our partners.Your focus will be on delivering great work, building a robust and high-performing team and winning work in your specialist field to grow this portfolio, opening doors to new workstreams and clients.

    It will be your responsibility to grow our road safety advisory offering, providing services linked to guidance, policy, standards development, research and trials to our clients. You will have the latitude to drive the direction of the advisory team in response to client and industry need, including looking ahead to future horizons and the challenges that new transport trends will bring (e.g. automated vehicles and driverless cars).

    Key responsibilities and duties include:
    Road Safety Advisory Lead development of the TMS Road Safety Advisory offering, working with the Asset & Advisory Portfolio Lead to achieve this goal Identify business opportunities within road safety advisory, lead on related bidding activities and grow the portfolio This broadly includes specialist road safety advisory services such as iRAP, and safety policy and guidance development, but there is scope for you to broaden this into other areas of interest (e.g. risk management and safety associated with connected vehicles, driverless vehicles) Technical Leadership Act as Project Technical Lead or Road Safety Discipline Lead on appropriate medium to large scale projects Act as a senior technical leader for our road safety discipline Develop and mentor junior staff in the team, building a robust technical group and giving people clear pathways for their development Provide technical and subject matter input to bids and opportunities to win new work Engage proactively with the Mott MacDonald Highways Practice globally as a subject matter expert Assist the Asset & Advisory Portfolio Lead with selecting and assigning appropriate technical resources to bids and projects Identify recruitment and development needs for the team Client Engagement and Business Development Drive efforts to secure specialist road safety work (e.g. advisory work on the SPaTS3 Framework) Support the WIN team with client engagement on road safety subject matter Build your internal Mott MacDonald network globally Maintain a strong external network, participating in industry forums, conferences and acting in Client-facing roles to demonstrate Mott MacDonald ability to respond to Client challenges Note, the prospective candidate should bring a strong external network with them to help grow the service Candidate specification
