    A vacancy has arisen for an assistant herdsperson seeking a rewarding role on a well-run unit comprising of up-to-date facilities with approximately 360 Friesian cows. The unit features modern cow housing and sand cubicles and 7 years ago installed a completely new milking/handling facility with 20:40 parlour with auto shedding; now running with GEA cow scout collars. We are looking for a team minded person who will value the opportunity to take an active role in the day to day running of this herd.

    The cows are autumn block calving on a forage based/ in parlour feeding system, with yields around 8500 litres per cow. Whilst milking a part of this role it does not dominate it. Therefore, you have the opportunity to play a broad and important role in the continued success of this business with the ability to develop a sound knowledge of herd health, fertility management, grazing/winter feeding, and hygienic milk production.     We are looking for someone to join our progressive team at our green field site dairy farm in south Leicestershire! The business centres around our Spring / Autumn block calved 400-cow Holstein Friesian dairy herd plus followers. Cows are milked 2 x per day through a 25:50 parlour, on a premium milk contract. The recently installed parlour has ADF, Auto ID, parlour feeders and auto shedding. The cows are grazed for as long as is practical and the weather permits. We have a clear focus on achieving the highest standards of animal health, milk from forage, animal welfare and performance. Cows are fed a full TMR when housed. The farm and facilities are well maintained with modern farm buildings, equipment and machinery. We continue to invest in the dairy. The Role: You will be working alongside the farm manager, two herds people and reliefs to achieve the best results for the staff, the dairy and the farm. Other roles and responsibilities will include: Regular milking. Responsibility for the management of the team and dairy unit, alongside the farm manager. To supervise the day-to-day management of the herd, ensuring animal welfare is the top priority. Oversee the beef growing / finishing unit Implementing the vaccination policy. Implementing agreed protocols and ensuring protocols are followed. Dairy herd record keeping and data reporting through Uniform and Crystal. Managing foot health, including generating lists for routine foot trimming visits. Engage with the farm manager and external consultants/vets to achieve agreed KPIs, financial budgets, and herd targets. Taking full responsibility for dry cow management, calving cows and colostrum protocols Assist in general stock and dairy duties as required (scraping, bedding and feeding). Keeping the farm tidy and safe to operate. You will be someone who enjoys milking cows and looks to get the best out of them and understands modern dairy cows and systems. We require a very enthusiastic and versatile assistant to help run the farm and maximise the amount of milk obtained from grazed grass. The herd is milked through a modern herringbone parlour with ACR's, ADF, and feeders; paddock grazed for as long as the weather dictates (generally February - Nov) and are housed in cubicles during the winter where they are fed block cut silage. Regular grass measuring takes place on a weekly basis. All data is inputted onto software to give a grass wedge. The herd is split into a spring and an autumn block, and all replacements are reared on farm. The successful candidate will be a very enthusiastic person who has previous experience on dairy farms and has very high standards in whatever they do. They must also be able to think for themselves and be highly motivated. Foot trimming and AI are preferable for this role. The parlour is modern, well maintained and includes an auto post teat spray, along with excellent handling facilities. Cows are housed year-round, fed a home-grown grass and maize TMR with additional cake in the parlour, housed in cubicles with mattresses bedded with sawdust. The appointed person who will have a full-time assistant will be responsible for all milkings, sorting cows for the fortnightly vet visit, and the contract foot trimmer, keeping the parlour in a clean and maintained condition, taking responsibility for all paperwork to include the medicine book, daily diary, Delvo testing, entering all information in the Uniform software, while overseeing the welfare of the herd; to include some night checks and calvings, although calves will be reared by other staff. RMS is taking care of the breeding programme, with all young-stock AI to sexed semen, and cows bred to maintain the 382-day calving index.
