    A contract vacancy has arisen for an enthusiastic, ambitious person to complete the team alongside the dairy herd two-man team. We seek a reliable operator with a solid machinery/dairy background looking to progress their career by assisting with the day-to-day routine and management of a 350-cow herd on a recognised tight autumn block calving, forage-based system. The herd is cubicle housed, with easy-feed grass/maize silage fed as self-feed and in mangers, with concentrates fed in the 16:32 DTL parlour. There is the opportunity for the successful applicant to join a large, well known dairy farming family business, focussing on field work, forage production, grassland management, machinery maintenance and have an input with the milking herd and youngstock, with the added benefit of general support from this committed farming operation.     An exciting contract vacancy has arisen for a highly accomplished and experienced herdsperson to take on the care of an organic herd in West Dorset near Crewkerne. The herd comprises 350 predominately autumn calved cows with a small spring block, which are milked through a 20:40 GEA parlour with ACR's, meters, auto ID & Seg, and auto wash. The unit, built 10 years ago, includes housing in cubicles allied to a well thought out handling system. Yield is around 8,800 litres per cow, with milk supplied to Yeo Valley. We require someone with a proven track record of caring for a herd of this size who can lead milkings, as well as working with other farm staff. Alongside milking, the role will comprise being proactive with herd health, doing AI, foot trimming, calving, night checks on a rota as well as working closely with the vet. You will also be responsible for record keeping and be involved in grass measuring & management. The unit is remote yet easily accessible with shops and schools nearby. Whilst the main enterprise and focus of the farm is the dairy unit, the family run beef and cropping enterprises and undertake most field work in house. The Holstein herd is cubicle housed in modern light buildings and is milked twice per day through a highly efficient 40/40 rapid exit parlour with excellent handling facilities and infrastructure to aid you in the care and management of the cows in your charge. Cows are achieving excellent results in terms of yield, milk hygiene and fertility results. The role would entail day to day management of the cows and the dairy team, undertaking milking, herd health and welfare, fertility work and foot health as well as daily record keeping, liaising with the vets and consultants and being a key part of driving the herd forward. When it comes to the team, you will lead by example, undertake staffing rotas and organise the team in their day-to-day duties. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in a similar role, have a proactive approach to herd management with the health of the cow and the motivation and leadership of the team at its core.
