We are currently looking for a head herdsperson to work alongside the farmer and established 2ic, running a 300-cow organic dairy herd in Wiltshire with help from RMS, calf rearers and foot trimmers. The herd is organic, and standards of husbandry have to be high. This is a rare opportunity to work in a team achieving great results in an extensive grass based organic system. The herd is loose housed. Emphasis is on home produced forage and the herd maintains spring and autumn calving blocks. The unit has been fully upgraded over the past ten years with new buildings, parlour, tracks, fencing and water systems. The job requires someone who can lead the existing 2ic and organise milking the cows once a day through a 24x48 dairymaster swingover parlour with ADF, full individual cows ID feeding and auto shedding. Good stockmanship skills are essential. However, an understanding of producing milk organically is not essential as full training can be provided. An ability to keep accurate herd records on the Uniform system would be an advantage. The farmer organises the bulk of the feeding and bedding work leaving the Head Herdsperson and 2ic to concentrate on cow care.
Car licence and means of transport is essential as the house is 1.5 miles from the dairy. A 4x4 would be helpful to get around the large farm and costs will be refunded. A competitive salary is available together with a lovely double glazed, centrally heated 3-bedroom house with large, well-fenced front and back gardens, on the farm, situated in a village setting, with a lovely primary school in close walking distance and amenities. The farm is 10 miles south of Marlborough in the village of Collingbourne Ducis. For an informal chat about the opportunity please ring Trevor Jolley on . We are looking for someone to lead a small team on a progressive grass-based farm in south Leicestershire. This unit makes up part of a wider business milking close to 1,000 cows in total. The successful candidate will have full control of the day-day running of the spring block-calving herd, which are mainly Friesian cross bred cows that graze from early spring until late autumn or however long conditions allow.
There is great infrastructure on the farm ranging from accommodation for all cows, to extensive track system to a great 24:48 parlour with circular backing gate
This is very much a hands-on role and you would be expected to lead from the front. Experience in foot trimming, AI and grazing management are essential along with great stock husbandry and record keeping. Experience and confidence are also essential qualities for this role as it is a satellite unit, so the successful candidate needs to be capable of dealing with all the challenges dairy farming throws at you without necessarily the support of an on-farm owner.
There is a fantastic 5-bedroom family home on-farm which is centrally heated and close to good schools and local amenities.
This is a great opportunity for someone who relishes the opportunity to take on the autonomy of running their own dairy unit, but with the support locally from the overall owner.
For an informal discussion please call Rob Stephenson on .
