The opportunityAutonomous wet labs are not a mature category. There is no established buyer journey, no standard contract structure, no obvious comp-set to anchor pricing against. The companies that will benefit most from what Substrate is building, including frontier AI labs, AI-native biotechs, and established pharma organisations, are only beginning to work out how experimental data at scale fits into their development pipelines. The VP of Business Development is the person who will work through that with them. This is Substrate's first dedicated commercial hire. The founding team has established early traction and a signed first commercial commitment, but the commercial function is, essentially, unbuilt. You will own it end to end: the relationships, the pipeline, the deal structures, the go-to-market motion, and the positioning work that makes Substrate comprehensible and compelling to each of the distinct customer archetypes in our ecosystem.About SubstrateSubstrate is building and operating a network of fully autonomous wet laboratories. We are the critical infrastructure layer for AI-driven biological discovery: cloud-based data production facilities, tightly integrated with AI foundation models, that make high-quality experimental biology as accessible as compute. We are a small team, four co-founders and a founding hire class now building out, with venture funding and government grants, opening our first node in London and a second node in San Francisco in parallel. The work is hard and the timeline is compressed. We have two scientific verticals live (protein characterisation and functional genomics), a software platform that connects API calls to automated assay execution, and a commercial pipeline that spans foundation model labs, AI biotechs, pharmaceutical companies, and publicly funded research organisations. We are growing to roughly thirty people by early 2027.The roleYou will own Substrate's commercial function end to end. The immediate priority is converting the existing pipeline into signed agreements and establishing the account relationships that will define Substrate's first year of commercial operation. The longer-term priority is building a go-to-market motion that scales as we add nodes and verticals. The obvious operational pieces are real and important: managing a pipeline across six customer segments, running deal processes from first contact through to executed agreement, representing Substrate at industry conferences and in the rooms where partnering decisions are made, and building the tracking and reporting systems that let the founders make good commercial decisions. Two parts of the role are less standard, and they are why this hire matters so much to Substrate's success. The first is category creation. Substrate's customers are being asked to adopt a new operating model for experimental work. The BD function is not selling a known service into a known budget line; it is helping customers understand why they need something they have not yet bought before. That requires technical fluency, patience, and an ability to work with customers to scope the specific integration that makes sense for them, whether that is a capacity agreement, a research partnership, or a closed-loop arrangement between their models and our lab.The second is dual-geography execution. Substrate is building simultaneously in London and San Francisco, which are the two reference hubs for Bio x AI. You will need to be effective in both, which means understanding the US and UK ecosystem in detail and being willing to operate across time zones and geographies as a matter of course. What you will do in your first twelve monthsFIRST 90 DAYS JUL TO SEP 2026• Map the existing pipeline in depth: understand the status, blockers, and next steps for every live conversation the founding team is holding.Build your own direct relationships with the fifteen to twenty counterparties most likely to be first commercial customers.Define the go-to-market segmentation for Substrate's two verticals, distinguishing the commercial motion appropriate for frontier AI labs, AI biotechs, pharma, and publicly funded organisations and the corresponding use cases.Develop draft term sheets and commercial frameworks for the two or three deal structures that cover most of the pipeline.Identify the key industry events in H2 2026 where Substrate should have a visible presence and lead the planning for those.MONTHS 4 TO 8 OCT 2026 TO FEB 2027• Close the first wave of commercial agreements ahead of the London node 1 going live.Establish a structured account management approach for the first customers, ensuring their onboarding and early experience is tracked and any issues surface quickly.Build out the SF pipeline in parallel with the London pipeline, identifying the ten to fifteen highest-priority targets in the Bay Area and beginning active conversations.Develop and refine Substrate's external positioning for each customer segment, working with the founders on the materials that support BD conversations.Refine the internal BD infrastructure: CRM, pipeline reporting, deal review cadence.MONTHS 9 TO 12 MAR TO JUN 2027• Achieve a commercial pipeline sufficient to underwrite Substrate's node 1 capacity targets for the twelve months following first commercial operation.Close the first few SF-originated agreements.Identify and assess the customer segments and use cases that should anchor the commercial strategy for Node 2 and beyond.Produce a BD playbook that documents the commercial motion in sufficient detail that a second BD hire can be effective within ninety days.Who you areThe pattern we are looking for is senior commercial experience in AI, biology, and the intersection of both, at a venture-backed company or a technology-intensive organisation where you were selling something novel. You will have a network that includes scientific and commercial decision-makers at AI labs, biotechs, or pharmaceutical companies. You will know how to move a deal from an introduction to a technical conversation to a signed agreement, and you will be comfortable doing that in a context where neither the product nor the pricing nor the customer budget line is yet fully established. You are technically comfortable. You do not need to be a scientist, but you need to be able to hold a substantive conversation with one. Substrate's customers include researchers and data scientists making architectural decisions about how to integrate external lab infrastructure into their development pipelines, and the BD conversation is often partly a scoping and technical specification conversation. You will be working closely with Anna, co-founder and lead for partnerships and go-to-market, and with the broader founding team. The commercial function does not sit at arm's length from the product or the science; it sits at the centre of how Substrate learns what it needs to build. We are looking for someone who is energised by the open-ended nature of what this role requires. The playbook does not exist yet. You will write it.MUST HAVE• Ten or more years of experience in business development, partnerships, or commercial leadership at a technology or life sciences company.A demonstrated track record of closing complex, multi-stakeholder deals in a B2B context.Strong existing relationships with commercial and scientific decision-makers at AI companies, biotechs, or pharmaceutical organisations. An existing network that spans both the London and San Francisco AI-biology ecosystems.Technical fluency sufficient to discuss experimental biology workflows, data infrastructure, or AI-driven drug discovery at a substantive level.Experience operating in a pre-commercial or early-commercial context, where deal structures and customer categories are still being defined.Willingness to be based in London or San Francisco, with frequent travel to the other location and to New York and Boston.NICE TO HAVE• Direct experience in data licensing or platform partnerships in the AI-biology space.Experience building and managing a commercial function from scratch, including CRM infrastructure, pipeline tracking, and team hiring.Scientific background (BSc or higher) in biology, chemistry, or a related field.Prior experience at an autonomous lab, cloud lab, or scientific services company.Prior experience in a venture-backed startup with a proven track record of excellent operational execution and high revenue growth. Why this is unusualMost senior BD roles in AI and biotech sit inside companies that have already established their category, their pricing, and at least a partial deal template. The work is to execute a known commercial motion against a known buyer profile. This is not that. Substrate is creating a new category of scientific infrastructure in real time. The buyer is working out what they need at the same time as you are working out how to sell it to them. That requires a very different commercial orientation: one that is as much about helping customers think through a new operating model as it is about moving them through a pipeline. The dual-geography dimension is also unusual. Substrate is building in London and San Francisco in parallel, not sequentially, and the commercial function needs to be effective in both. The London ecosystem (proximity to the UK AI-biology cluster, foundation model organisations, European pharma) and the SF ecosystem (frontier AI labs, Bay Area biotech, the US institutional research base) are different in composition and commercial culture.Compensation and equityCompensation is competitive against London and San Francisco market rates for a senior commercial hire at a venture-backed company, calibrated to the seniority and scope of this role. Equity is meaningful, on the standard four-year vesting schedule with a one-year cliff. We are happy to discuss the structure and philosophy in more detail with shortlisted candidates. We sponsor visas for exceptional candidates at both the London and San Francisco locations. How we workHybrid, with a strong bias toward in-person time at your base location. London candidates are expected to be in person at our King's Cross lab and office most working days during the first six months; San Francisco candidates are expected to be in person at the SF node on a similar basis once the node is operational. Remote days are available and we are sensible about it, but this is a relationship-intensive role and the in-person time matters.30 days annual leave. A learning and development budget. Quarterly offsites. We are building the rest of the benefits package as the team arrives. The team you will joinYou will report to Anna Huyghues-Despointes, co-founder, who owns partnerships and go-to-market at Substrate. Anna was previously Chief Corporate Development and Strategy Officer at Owkin and an investor at Balderton Capital. You will work closely with the full founding team: Oli Hoy, who leads infrastructure build and lab delivery; Alexey Morgunov, who leads the AI and scientific intelligence work; and Mostafa ElSayed, CEO and founder of Automata, who leads the investor and government engagement side of Substrate.Substrate is a small team growing to roughly thirty people by early 2027. This is a founding-team-adjacent hire; you will have direct access to the people making product, scientific, and strategic decisions, and your commercial work will directly shape those decisions. How to applyApply via Ashby. Include a short message describing who you are, why this role makes sense for you now, and what you think the hardest part of it will be is more useful to us than a cover letter. We will move fast.If you are not certain you are a fit, send a note anyway. The role is new and the framing will evolve; we would rather have a conversation with the right person and refine the role.Substrate is an equal opportunity employer. We make hiring decisions on merit, scope-fit, and the strength of the working relationship we expect to build with each hire. Applications welcome from candidates of any background.Find more English Speaking Jobs in United Kingdom on Arbeitnow #J-18808-Ljbffr Read Less

THE OPPORTUNITY We are building Watcher, a coding agent security product. We are looking for a security & control expert to help us design better threat models and control protocols against AI adversaries, and improve the effectiveness and security of Watcher. A security & control expert embedded in the product team with three functions: Research: Supporting Apollo's monitoring research with threat modeling, attack design, red‑team and trajectory analysis (~50%) Expert view: Bring a security expert’s view of what security buyers need to make Watcher a better product (~25%) Product security: Improve the security posture of Watcher and Apollo's product infrastructure (~25%) This is truly a “start‑up role” in the sense that you have many responsibilities and have significant say in shaping the direction of the role. This is an individual contributor role but could lead to management responsibilities eventually, if desired. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Security support for research (50%) Threat modeling for coding agents Develop threat models for coding agents under the assumption that they could be misaligned or compromised. This includes near‑term threats like AI agents leaking private internal data and long‑term threats like agents sabotaging safety research. Treat coding agents through the lens of insider risk: they have credentials, access to code, network access, and the ability to execute arbitrary actions, just like a malicious insider would. Map out kill chains and attack progressions similar to frameworks like MITRE ATT&CK, adapted for agentic AI. Build and maintain our “coding agent security levels” which define what level of robustness Watcher provides against different categories of failure modes. These levels should be concrete, testable, and usable both internally (to guide product priorities) and externally (to communicate our security posture to customers). Failure mode library and literature Maintain our library of coding agent failure modes and keep it comprehensive, accurate, and current. Stay up to date with the academic and industry literature on coding agent security, AI security, and adjacent fields (prompt injection, deception, accidental security implications, supply chain attacks on AI systems, etc.). Attack design for monitor development Design realistic attack trajectories and example exploits for monitor development and backtesting, work with the research team to ensure monitors are trained and evaluated against credible adversarial behavior. Trajectory adjudication Serve as security adjudicator for flagged trajectories. When monitors flag ambiguous agent behavior, determine whether it represents a genuine attack, a benign‑but‑unusual workflow, or needs deeper investigation, and feed those judgments back into monitor improvement. Red‑teaming Watcher Red‑team and improve Watcher's monitors and policies, document findings, and feed them into product improvement. Work with the technical research staff to build adversarial test suites into the backtesting pipeline. Security expertise for product (25%) Failure mode prioritization and CISO perspective Understand which failure modes are the biggest problems and prioritise systematically what is most useful to solve for security buyers. Customer engagement and landscape awareness Join customer/prospect calls to understand security needs firsthand and map them onto the threat models and library of failure modes. Maintain awareness of how enterprises currently secure coding agents (or don’t), what tools they use (SIEM, DLP, CSPM), and how Watcher fits into their existing stack. Customer‑facing security artifacts Own security questionnaire responses, product security whitepapers, and support for customer pen‑tests. Own technical content of customer‑facing communications during incidents. Improving security posture for product (25%) Attack surface, infrastructure, and isolation Own AppSec standards for the product engineering team (code review security checklists, dependency scanning, secrets management in CI/CD, container hardening) Own vendor security decisions for product: which SaaS tools can we integrate and what restrictions should we have. Reduce attack surface for all product‑related deployments, infra and cloud deployment work, and ensure clean isolation between the Apollo Product team and other teams at Apollo to prevent lateral movement either way. Data handling and multi‑tenancy Define security requirements for tenant isolation, encryption at rest/in transit, access controls, and data retention policies for customer coding agent transcripts with the product engineering lead. Product threat model and incident response Co‑own the product‑specific threat model with the product team lead (distinct from the org‑wide threat model owned by existing security engineers) and keep it up to date. REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS Develop a comprehensive coding agent threat model: Think deeply about all the ways in which coding agents could attack an organization. Compare this threat model to conventional threats from human insiders. Publish a detailed research piece describing the threat model building on existing research, e.g. from Redwood Research. Improve our database of failure modes: We have an internal database of 50+ failure modes of coding agents with detailed reports for all of them. For this project, you would provide an expert view on the current state of that database and suggest improvements. In the long run, you would maintain that database and be responsible for integration of new failures. Prioritize failure modes that Watcher should cover: Different parts of Watcher attempt to cover different threat models and attack strategies. Based on the results of the threat model project above, we want to ensure that each part of Watcher covers the most important failure modes in the most efficient way. For example, not all monitors require blocking capability and some failure modes might benefit from additional affordances like being able to disperse subagents. Design a security roadmap for keeping customer data for Watcher secure: Watcher runs on top of coding agents which means that it accesses highly sensitive information. We need to ensure that this data is stored in a secure manner and the attack surface created by Watcher is as small as possible. JOB REQUIREMENTS Must‑haves 5+ years in security roles in a hands‑on technical capacity (not purely GRC/compliance). You’d need to be able to think structurally about threat modeling and failure modes. You need to be able to read code, understand infrastructure, and evaluate technical controls, not just write policies. Engineering mindset: You treat security as an engineering problem. You are capable of, and willing to, build custom solutions when the task demands it, rather than relying solely on ‘glueing’ together off‑the‑shelf tools. You prioritise automation and systems‑level thinking to scale security, and you are comfortable leveraging AI to accelerate development. Direct experience with application security, cloud security, or product security. Ideally has owned or significantly contributed to the security posture of a product that handles sensitive customer data. Strong understanding of enterprise security buyer concerns. Ideally has been a security engineer or senior security leader at an organisation that buys security tooling, or has worked closely enough with those buyers to internalise their priorities. Comfortable working in a small, fast‑moving team where they’ll need to context‑switch between hands‑on security work and strategic product thinking within the same week. Strong written communication. This role produces a lot of artefacts (threat models, security levels, questionnaire responses, failure mode documentation) and they need to be clear and precise. Strong nice‑to‑haves Experience with AI/ML systems security, LLM security, or AI control research. The field is young enough that deep experience here is rare, but any exposure significantly reduces ramp‑up time. Detection engineering, SOC, or incident analysis experience. A part of this role is judging whether flagged agent behaviour is genuinely malicious, and people who have triaged real‑world alerts might ramp much faster. Familiarity with insider threat programmes or insider risk frameworks. The mental model of ‘the coding agent is a potentially malicious insider’ is useful for this role and someone who has worked on insider threats will pick it up faster. Experience in a security vendor or security product company. Building security products is different from consuming them, and someone who has done both will bridge the gap between “what CISOs want” and “what we can actually build” more effectively. Red‑teaming or offensive security background. Useful for the Watcher red‑teaming responsibilities and for thinking adversarially about failure modes. Formal AI safety research background. Helpful but not necessary. We need security practitioners who can learn the AI safety context, not AI safety researchers who need to learn security. Explicitly not required Management experience. This is an IC role, at least initially. Specific certifications (CISSP, etc.). We care about demonstrated ability, not credentials. BENEFITS This role offers market competitive salary, equity, and competitive benefits. Salary: 135k - 200k GBP (~180k - 270k USD) Flexible work hours and schedule Unlimited vacation Unlimited sick leave Up to 6 months of paid parental leave Comprehensive health, dental and vision insurance Retirement savings with competitive employer matching (e.g. 401(k) for US employees) Lunch, dinner, and snacks are provided for all employees on workdays Paid work trips, including staff retreats, business trips, and relevant conferences A yearly $1,000 (USD) professional development budget Relocation support and visa fees (if applicable) LOGISTICS Time Allocation: Full‑time Location: This is an in‑person role working out of our London or San Francisco office. We offer flexible working hours and some WFH arrangements. Visa sponsorship: We sponsor visas in both the UK and US. Sponsorship isn’t guaranteed for every role or candidate, but if we make you an offer, we’ll work with you to find the right visa route. ABOUT THE TEAM The Product / Control team is a new team. Especially early on, you will work closely with Marius Hobbhahn (CEO & currently leads the monitoring team), Victor Gillioz (Research Scientist), Monika Jotautaitė (Research Scientist), and our product engineers: Jeremy Neiman, Zak Walters, Zen van Riel, and Srdjan Miletic. Furthermore you will interact with our other SWEs and researchers, since we intend to be “our own customer” by using our products internally for our research work. ABOUT APOLLO RESEARCH The rapid rise in AI capabilities offer tremendous opportunities, but also present significant risks. At Apollo Research, we’re primarily concerned with risks from Loss of Control, i.e. risks coming from the model itself rather than e.g. humans misusing the AI. We’re particularly concerned with deceptive alignment / scheming, a phenomenon where a model appears to be aligned but is, in fact, misaligned and capable of evading human oversight. We work on the detection of scheming (e.g. building evaluations), the science of scheming (e.g. model organisms), and scheming mitigations (e.g. anti‑scheming and control). We closely work with multiple frontier AI companies, e.g. to test their models before deployment or collaborate on scheming mitigations. At Apollo, we aim for a culture that emphasises truth‑seeking, being goal‑oriented, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and being friendly and helpful. Equality Statement: Apollo Research is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity and are committed to providing equal opportunities to all, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. #J-18808-Ljbffr Read Less

As an Infrastructure engineer, you'll be at the heart of making this a reality, impacting every enterprise customer who trusts us with their AI-powered workflows. This isn't just about keeping the lights on; it's about pushing the boundaries of what's possible, proactively identifying and solving complex systemic challenges, and laying the groundwork for our rapid growth and the evolving demands of enterprise generative AI. You'll build resilient systems, automate across the stack, and champion reliability best practices, directly enabling our ambitious product roadmap and ensuring our customers always have access to the powerful tools they need. This is a hybrid position, based out of our New York City or London hubs. You'll report to our director of engineering. What you'll doTechnicalBreadth across disciplines. Bring deep focus to one problem at a time, with the breadth to move between SRE, DevOps, Infrastructure, and Platform work over a quarter or two as the leverage shifts. This is not a thrash-every-week role — most of the time you're heads-down on one substantial initiative (the on-call posture, the release pipeline, the multi-region Terraform layout, the internal platform surface). Cross-layer fluency is what lets you pick the right next initiative; it isn't a weekly context-switch.Simplicity / via negativa. Challenge the status quo and remove toil before adding features — automate operational tasks and infrastructure management with Python or Go, reject tools that don't fit the problem, and treat manual on-call work as a defect to be designed out, not a status quo to be staffed up.Breadth across the stack. Design scalable, fault-tolerant infrastructure across AWS (preferred), GCP, and Azure, working fluently across Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, and the supporting cloud and AI tooling that backs the company's high-traffic platform.AI in workflow. Run agents in your daily loop — Claude Code, Droid, Codex, internal skills — to investigate incidents, draft Terraform / Helm changes, write runbooks, scaffold tooling, and review PRs. Build the agentic setup as a collective surface: humans and digital teammates working as one team, with shared skills, shared context, and shared on-call workflows. Encode recurring infra tasks as internal skills any teammate (human or agent) can pick up and run, so the team's throughput compounds — not just your own.Debugging fluency. Lead incident response, post-mortems, and root-cause analyses — trace failures to the underlying problem (never the symptom), apply the learning back into the architecture, and prevent the same incident from happening twice.Non-technicalEnd-to-end ownership. Own the reliability, performance, and efficiency of the company's core services end-to-end — define and uphold the SLOs and error budgets, carry the on-call pager, and stand behind the outcome metric, not just the system you shipped.Strategic vs. tactical balance. Balance this week's critical work with the 6–12-month platform direction — ship the on-call-driving fix today while shaping the multi-year observability, cost, and reliability investments that move the company's enterprise customers.Cross-functional collaboration. Operate at the seams with product, security, and engineering peers — provide expert guidance on system design for reliability, performance, and scalability from conception through launch, Connect the infra agenda to product and revenue context, and disagree with evidence, not volume. What you needTechnicalTrack record. 5+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, DevOps, or a similar role focused on building and operating large-scale, high-availability production systems at a high-growth product company.Breadth. Experience running containerisation in production (a real cluster, not a lab), with experience in Helm and Terraform or Pulumi on at least one major cloud (AWS preferred), plus good proficiency in Python or Go for automation and tooling.AI in workflow. AI is part of how you ship, not a thing you've read about — agentic tooling (Claude Code, Droid, Codex, internal skills) is in your daily loop, you've built or adopted AI-assisted workflows others now use, and you have strong opinions on where it's unreliable. This is a hard requirement, not a bonus. Candidates whose actual daily workflow does not already include AI tooling will not be advanced.First-principles + decision-making. Demonstrated ability to Challenge the status quo, proactively identify systemic weaknesses, and propose innovative solutions to complex reliability problems — reason from constraints and failure modes (not analogy or vendor defaults), name the tradeoff in business terms (reliability vs. velocity, cost vs. blast radius, standardisation vs. one-off), and reject the "best practices" answer when it doesn't fit the problem.Reversibility & blast-radius. Make reversible calls by default — write the rollback before you touch production, work fluently with monitoring and logging stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK or equivalent), and stress the system in safe places so it comes back stronger.Non-technicalCross-functional collaboration. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with a talent for building strong relationships and Connecting with cross-functional teams — surface non-goals before anyone asks, and partner with product, security, and platform peers as one delivery surface.Autonomy & end-to-end ownership. A strong sense of ownership and accountability, eager to Own mission-critical systems and drive them toward peak performance and unparalleled reliability. At least one 0-to-1 infrastructure build you owned end-to-end, with the outcome metric attached.Bonus if you haveSoftware-engineering depth. A software-engineering background, not only config and scripting — you've designed, built, and shipped non-trivial production code (services, libraries, internal frameworks) in Python, Go, or a comparable language, you can read and modify the codebases your infrastructure runs, and you move between infra automation and feature engineering without changing brains.Benefits & perks (UK full-time employees):Generous PTO, plus company holidaysComprehensive medical and dental insurancePaid parental leave for all parents (16 weeks)Fertility and family planning supportEarly-detection cancer testing through GalleriCompetitive pension scheme and company contributionAnnual work-life stipends for:Wellness stipend for gym, massage/chiropractor, personal training, etc.Learning and development stipendCompany-wide off-sites and team off-sitesCompetitive compensation and company stock options #J-18808-Ljbffr Read Less
