They will create detailed 3D CAD models, select appropriate materials and manufacturing methods and perform thermal and structural analysis to ensure all designs meet stringent performance, reliability, and environmental requirements. The mechanical design engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. This includes working with RF, electronics, process, systems and manufacturing engineers during concept development, prototype builds, testing, and validation. Must be a highly motivated individual able to interface effectively with internal & external customers RequirementsMechanical Design & DevelopmentDesign precision mechanical components and assemblies for RF modules, including housings, hermetic packages, heatsinks, waveguide structures, and test fixtures.Create detailed 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings.Ensure designs meet stringent RF, thermal, mechanical, and environmental requirements (EMI shielding, stiffness, tolerancing, CTE matching, vibration, IP rating).Thermal & Structural AnalysisPerform thermal simulations (CFD, thermal, conjugate) to validate cooling system design and ensure reliable operation of high-power mmWave amplifiers and electronics.Conduct structural analysis (FEA) for vibration, shock, fatigue, and drop-test conditions where required.Confirm simulation assumptions through lab measurement and testing. RF-Aware Mechanical EngineeringCollaborate with RF and electronics engineers to optimise mechanical features that influence RF performance (cavity geometry, surface finish, plating, tolerances, material selection).Design mechanical solutions with consideration for waveguide structures, micro-machined components, PCB integration, and precision alignment. Manufacturing SupportDevelop designs for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA) using processes including CNC machining, die-casting, additive manufacturing and sheet metal manufacturing.Generate manufacturing documentation, BOMs, GD&T drawings, and assembly instructions.Support suppliers and production teams, including first-article approval, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement. Prototyping & TestingOversee build and test of mechanical prototypes.Support environmental and reliability testing (thermal cycling, humidity, vibration, thermal shock, drop tests).Work with test engineering to develop automated or manual test jigs.

This role encompasses oversight and guidance in all phases of project development, facilitating seamless collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to achieve optimal results.Summary of Responsibilities:Take full responsibility for all aspects of filter and sub-system design, including simulation, prototyping and validation.Contribute to Research and Development into next generation filter solutions.Support Sales functions during the quotation phases including technical correspondence with customers.Compile and verify design documentation, such as design logbooks, data packs, peer reviews in preparation for design release and production.Deliver fully verified and documented designs in line with project-defined technical, schedule and cost constraints.Prepare and review tollgate documentation in accordance with Filtronic ‘New Product Introduction’ (NPI) procedures.Proactively participate in design reviews, and initiate design reviews to mitigate risk when appropriate.Conduct all aspects of design verification and validation including preparation of test specifications, test reports and reliability testing/evaluation.Maintain an up-to-date, comprehensive design compliance matrix, referencing robust evidence of compliance data for assigned designs.Solve problems and diagnose faults in manufactured products during product introduction – including defining and training-out diagnostic procedures.RequirementsRelevant Degree (or equivalent) preferably in RF/Microwave Engineering.Proficiency in using RF design tools such as Microwave Office, and CST Studio and Spark3D.Significant experience of RF and Microwave Filter design including tolerance/yield analysis, power handling / temperature drift assessment, MTBF calculations and DFM.Demonstrable hands-on experience of tuning RF and microwave filters using VNA’s, power handling and temperature tests.Must be a highly motivated individual able to interface effectively with internal and external customersThe above provides an overview of the key responsibilities for this role; however, duties may evolve to meet the needs of the business.BenefitsWe recognise the value of exceptional talent.
