We work in a national team, in the Environment and Business (E&B) directorate, helping to plan and to implement plans for the Water Industry related to protecting and improving environmental water quality. This post is to support our Waste Water Flow Strategy and Flow Improvement Plan delivery.
Due to the increase in water and sewerage company flow information and the requirement of large amounts of data management and assessment, we need a new Technical Leader to use their extensive knowledge of this sector to work with our current Senior Advisors to develop tools, polices and guidance to assist operations in their compliance and enforcement work.
In addition to the technical knowledge of the wastewater sector, we also are keen to speak to candidates who have project/programme management experience and can lead a group of advisors and help them deliver key outcomes.

The Team
Our Water Industry Compliance, Incidents and Enforcement Teams work closely together and use evidence, engagement and innovation to support delivery. We influence policy and secure resources for regulation of the water industry and wider water sector. We work closely with Operational Teams and other Environment & Business departments to ensure Areas have the tools and support to deliver their compliance and enforcement work effectively.
Experience/Skills Required
We are looking for talented, dynamic technical leader to support the development and delivery of programmes, initiatives, training and projects designed to improve regulation of the water industry and wider water sector.
You will have:
• Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work. • Experience understanding Flow to Full Treatment Methodologies • Experience of Water Industry site processes and assets • Experience understanding and managing complex data sets • Experience of answering complex technical enquiries and information requests • Experience of leading projects and/or Programmes from concept to embedding • A high level of technical understanding of water industry flow processes is desired for applicants.

What will you do? Working alongside our Senior Nuclear Waste Assessors, you ll support assessment of the suitability of proposals for managing and disposing of radioactive waste for both proposed and existing facilities. You ll support communications with the nuclear industry, other regulators in the UK and overseas, the public and occasionally the media. Your work will have a tangible impact on radioactive waste management in the UK. You will provide specialist technical input across one or more of the following areas Proposed and existing disposal facilities for radioactive waste, including proposals for geological disposal of wastes Nuclear site waste management plans for higher activity wastes The development of nuclear waste management policy and guidance Radioactive waste management for new reactor designs and for new nuclear power stations.
What will I need? Essential: Together with a scientific degree or equivalent vocational experience, you ll have lived in the UK for the last 3 years in line with Environment Agency enhanced security checks. You ll have some experience of the treatment, conditioning, and/or disposal of solid radioactive waste within the nuclear or associated industry with a sound understanding of corresponding environmental challenges and issues. You ll be looking to further develop your skills. You ll also possess a proven ability to assess and analyse technical proposals. Experience of safety cases for radioactive waste management and disposal is desirable.
Full UK driving licence is also required. You also need: The ability to make decisions by assessing incomplete and disparate information/evidence. We determine often complex applications, carrying out rigorous checks in process such as habitats risk assessments, modelling, consultations, pre-applications and more. What will you do: As a Senior Permitting Officer within our Water Quality regime, you'll determine complex applications and deliver pre-application advice for water quality environmental permits.
You'll play a crucial role in safeguarding the environment, proactively managing a range of permit applications for a wide range of activities including ground and surface water discharges, chemicals, including hazardous pollutants, types of sewage connections and habitats, delivering high quality and risk-based environmental permitting decisions to tight deadlines.
You'll support other Permitting Officers across Permitting using your strong coaching and mentoring skills, collaborate with professionals from various disciplines and engage with permit applicants, ranging from multinational companies and water & sewerage companies to individual householders.
Your work directly contributes to creating a more sustainable and safer environment for all ensuring that permits are in place to enable compliance with EA processes and regulatory obligations. What do you need:
Essential: You'll need strong experience and be able demonstrate technical competency in at least one of the following areas:
• Water regulation (Environmental Permitting Regulations, Water Resources Act, Water Industry Act) • Modelling of sanitary or hazardous pollutants • Wastewater treatment and/or wastewater engineering
Additionally, we would expect successful candidates to: • Have knowledge of water quality issues and the policies surrounding them. • Experience in coaching/mentoring others in a technical discipline. • Be confident challenging, questioning and influencing a range of internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable:
Ideally you will hold a degree (or equivalent) in a science/environmental/humanities subject and knowledge/understanding of the Habitats Directive, Habitats Regulations and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. You will also possess:
• Confidence in providing direction as a technical leader. • The ability to work collaboratively across teams, the wider business, and with stakeholders and partners. • Excellent communication and influencing skills and experience of communicating technical topics to a non-technical audience. • The ability to build strong relationships with customers and be capable of handling difficult conversations, displaying confidence in making risk-based decisions providing justifiable reasoning behind your choices. • The ability to plan and prioritise work, respond to tight deadlines to ensure tasks are achieved. • Proficiency in IT including experience with data management, information processing and tools such as MS Word and MS Excel and job specific digital platforms such as GIS and modelling tools.

Working alongside our Senior Nuclear Waste Assessors, you ll support assessment of the suitability of proposals for managing and disposing of radioactive waste for both proposed and existing facilities. You ll support communications with the nuclear industry, other regulators in the UK and overseas, the public and occasionally the media. Your work will have a tangible impact on radioactive waste management in the UK. You will provide specialist technical input across one or more of the following areas Proposed and existing disposal facilities for radioactive waste, including proposals for geological disposal of wastes Nuclear site waste management plans for higher activity wastes The development of nuclear waste management policy and guidance. Radioactive waste management for new reactor designs and for new nuclear power stations.
What will I need? Essential: Together with a scientific degree or equivalent vocational experience, you ll have lived in the UK for the last 3 years in line with Environment Agency enhanced security checks. You ll have some experience of the treatment, conditioning, and/or disposal of solid radioactive waste within the nuclear or associated industry with a sound understanding of corresponding environmental challenges and issues. You ll be looking to further develop your skills. You ll also possess a proven ability to assess and analyse technical proposals. Experience of safety cases for radioactive waste management and disposal is desirable.
Full UK driving licence is also required. You also need: The ability to make decisions by assessing incomplete and disparate information/evidence. Ability to prioritise work to ensure tasks are achieved to time, quality and cost. Excellent technical report writing. Experience of working in a customer-facing role and understanding of good customer practice. The ability to develop and maintain relationships with immediate team members and those from other teams. The ability to communicate with and influence the full range of internal and external stakeholders with whom you ll interact to ensure that our nuclear regulation programmes are delivered.
