Discover more about life at DeepL onLinkedIn,Instagram, and our Blog.Meet the team behind this journeyDeepL is not just a translation tool; we are building the Operating System for Global Communication. We are the rare AI company that builds the entire stack in-house: from training next-gen LLMs on our own NVIDIA DGX SuperPODs to delivering real-time Language AI to over 300 million users and 200,000+ businesses globally. We are shifting gears. We are moving from "Software-First" to "Product-First." We don't hire engineers to just close tickets or optimize algorithms in isolation. We hire Missionaries—builders who obsess over the Why before the How.As a Software Engineer at DeepL, you will join a high-performance culture where "good enough" isn't enough. You won't be treated as a "junior" who only fixes bugs; you will be a core contributor shipping user-facing features, collaborating with Senior Engineers, and growing your skills at the speed of our scale. We are looking for engineers with a "high slope"—builders who learn fast, ship often, and care deeply about the product they build.Your responsibilitiesShip Features, Not Just Code: You will own the implementation of end-to-end features. You won't just write functions in isolation; you will ensure your code solves the actual user problem, works in production, and is covered by robust tests.Collaborate to Raise the Bar: You will actively participate in pair programming, code reviews, and technical discussions. You aren't afraid to ask for help, but you also aren't afraid to challenge a design if you think there is a better way.Leverage Modern Tooling: You will use AI-assisted tools (like Copilot and Claude) to handle boilerplate and refactoring, allowing you to focus on logic and product value. We value engineers who use the best tools to ship faster.Build for Quality: You will write clean, maintainable code that your future self (and your team) will thank you for. You understand that "speed" doesn't mean "sloppy"—it means building reliable software that doesn't break at 2am.Qualities we look forA "Product-First" Mindset: You care about who uses your software. You ask questions about the feature requirements and suggest improvements, rather than blindly following a spec.High Learning Trajectory (High Slope): You might not know everything yet, but you learn incredibly fast. You are curious about the full stack—from the database query to the React component—and you actively seek out hard problems to grow.Strong Engineering Fundamentals: You have a solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, and clean coding principles. You can take a complex logic problem and break it down into small, solvable pieces.Adaptability: We use C#/.NET Core, Python, React, and Kubernetes. We don't expect you to be an expert in all of them today, but we expect you to be willing to jump in and learn whatever tool gets the job done.AI-Native Velocity: You leverage AI-powered tools (like GitHub Copilot or Claude) to accelerate your velocity and eliminate repetitive toil. You use AI for boilerplate code, test generation, and debugging, allowing you to focus your cognitive energy on high-value architectural decisions and complex problem-solving.A Note on Our Hiring Process: DeepL hires for the Company, not just a specific team. We operate a Unified Engineering Pipeline. If you pass our bar, we will match you to the highest-priority role that fits your skillset—whether that is in Core Product, Platform, Voice, or Enterprise. We prioritize "Missionaries" who want to solve the biggest problems, wherever they live in the stack. What we offerDiverse and internationally distributed team: joining our team means becoming part of a large, global community with people of more than 90 nationalities. We're more than just colleagues; we're a group of professionals with a shared mission to connect diverse cultures. Our global presence is growing–we've doubled in size nearly every year, with our employees based in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, the US, and Japan, and we continue to expand our network.Open communication, regular feedback: as a language-focused company, we value the importance of clear, honest communication. We value smooth collaboration, direct and actionable feedback, and believe that leading with empathy and growth mindset makes us better together.Hybrid work, flexible hours: we offer a hybrid work schedule, with team members coming into the office twice a week. This allows you to engage directly with your team and experience the unique energy of our workspace, while still enjoying the flexibility and comfort of working from home. With flexible working hours and trust in your productivity, we are in sync with your team’s general locations and time zones to foster effective and seamless collaboration.Virtual Shares - An ownership mindset in every role. We believe everyone should share in our success, and that’s why every employee receives Virtual Shares, linking your contribution directly to DeepL’s growth and rewarding you with a stake in our future.Regular in-person team events: we bond over vibrant events that are as unique as our team, from local team and business unit gatherings, to new-joiner onboardings, to company-wide events that bring us all together–literally.Monthly full-day hacking sessions: every month, we have Hack Fridays, where you can spend your time diving into a project you're passionate about and get the opportunity to work with other teams–we value your initiatives, impact, and creativity.30 days of annual leave: we value your peace of mind. With 30 days off (excluding public holidays) and access to mental health resources, we make sure you're as strong mentally as you are professionally.Competitive benefits: just as our team spans the globe, so does our benefits package. We've crafted it to reflect the diversity of our team and tailored it to align with your unique location, to ensure you feel supported every step of the way.If this role and our mission resonate with you, but you're hesitant because you don't check all the boxes, don't let that hold you back. At DeepL, it's all about the value you bring and the growth we can foster together. Go ahead, apply—let's discover your potential together. We can't wait to meet you!#LI-JL1We are an equal opportunity employerYou are welcome at DeepL for who you are - we appreciate authenticity here. Our product is for everyone, and so is our workplace. The more voices we have represented and amplified in our business, the more we will all succeed, contribute, and think forward! We own the systems that keep our commercial workflows running reliably, and we build the tooling that lets teams across the business move faster and operate more independently. We work closely with GTM, Sales, Finance, Product, and platform engineering, and we hold a high bar for quality in a domain where reliability and data integrity matter.Your ResponsibilitiesOwn the engineering delivery of the team — set the pace, hold the bar, and remove blockers to ensure consistent, predictable output across active development and ongoing system ownership.Partner with Product and commercial stakeholders to define and maintain a prioritised roadmap, balancing strategic product investment against the steady-state ownership of a critical internal tooling estate.Build and develop a high-performing team — hire deliberately, onboard engineers with care, grow talent through structured development conversations, and manage performance directly when needed.Represent your team's delivery health and technical direction to senior stakeholders across the business, establishing yourself as a credible engineering partner to leadership.Maintain technical engagement at the right level: make sound architectural trade-off decisions, enable your engineers to do their best work, and stay close enough to the system to identify risk early.Drive cross-functional alignment across GTM, Sales, Finance, Product, and platform engineering — build the working relationships that reduce friction and unlock fast, independent delivery.Shape the team's operating cadence — ceremonies, planning, feedback loops — in a way that matches the pace and complexity of the work without adding unnecessary overhead.Identify and escalate risks early, with a clear point of view on what needs to change.Qualities We Look ForProven track record as an Engineering Manager with direct line management of engineers building complex software products in a fast-moving environment.Strong delivery instincts — you have established or rebuilt delivery cadences on teams that needed them, and you know how to maintain velocity when priorities shift.Technical credibility: you engage comfortably in architectural and system design conversations, your engineers trust your technical judgement, and you are not a pure process manager.Experience navigating cross-functional stakeholder complexity — you translate engineering trade-offs into commercial language and push back constructively on scope creep.A thoughtful, deliberate approach to people leadership — you hire with intention, develop engineers systematically, and address underperformance with directness and care.Comfort managing concurrent workstreams of different types — you can hold both active product development and ongoing system maintenance without either drifting, and you make deliberate trade-off decisions when priorities compete.Comfort operating with ambiguity and evolving context — you bring structure without imposing rigidity.A background in B2B SaaS or any environment where engineering decisions have direct commercial or operational impact is welcome. What we offerDiverse and internationally distributed team: joining our team means becoming part of a large, global community with people of more than 90 nationalities. We hire Missionaries—builders who obsess over the Why before the How.As a Senior Engineer at DeepL, you will operate with the agency of a founder. You will join a high-performance engineering culture that values shipping speed, system reliability, and direct business impact over theoretical perfection, whether you are building our next-gen Voice API, architecting our massive billing engine, or scaling our core product platform, you will own your domain end-to-end.Your responsibilitiesOwn the Outcome, Not Just the Code: You will move beyond "implementing specs." You will own revenue-critical systems from the initial problem definition through to architectural design, deployment, and production reliability. You measure success by user impact, not just pull requests merged .Architect for Ambiguity: You will make high-stakes technical decisions (monolith vs. microservice, consistency vs. availability) with incomplete information. You don't wait for perfect requirements; you identify risks, build prototypes, and iterate based on real-world feedback.Bridge the Gap: You will be bilingual in "Engineering" and "Business." You will translate complex technical constraints (latency, eventual consistency) into business terms for Product Managers, ensuring we negotiate the right trade-offs to ship value faster .Drive Technical Pragmatism: You will avoid "Resume-Driven Development." Whether using our core stack (C#/.NET Core, Python, Kubernetes, React) or exploring new tools, you choose the technology that solves the customer problem most effectively, ensuring long-term maintainability over short-term trends.Qualities we look forA "System Thinker" Mindset: You don't just know syntax; you understand failure modes, system boundaries, and how your code impacts the broader architecture at scale. You can design systems that survive 10x growth.High Agency & Bias for Action: You don't wait for permission. If you see a fire, you put it out. If the documentation is missing, you write it. You are comfortable unblocking yourself and the team in a fast-paced environment .Product Fluency: You care deeply about the user. You ask "Why are we building this?" before writing a line of code. You have a track record of shipping features that solve real business problems.Polyglot & Adaptable: While experience with C#/.NET Core or React is a bonus, we value engineers who can pick up the right tool for the job. You are comfortable traversing the full stack, from the database lock to the UI state.AI-Native Velocity: You leverage AI-powered tools (like GitHub Copilot or Claude) to accelerate your velocity and eliminate repetitive toil.
