    Field Programmes Estate Biodiversity Industry Placement Full-time 12 month industrial placement commencing September 2026 Are you excited by the prospect of gaining invaluable work experience with one of Europe’s leading Conservation Zoos? This one-year placement provides experience within our Field Programmes Department at Chester Zoo, which facilitates, coordinates and develops field conservation projects. This placement will focus on habitat management and native species monitoring across the wider Zoo Estate, which is home to a wide range of habitats and some of the UK’s most protected species.

    What you’ll be doing... The placement will work alongside the wider Field Programmes Team, but predominantly within the Estate Biodiversity team who manage the Chester Zoo estate’s biodiversity areas. The Estate Biodiversity placement will include: Assisting with day-to-day practical habitat management activities including scrub clearance, coppicing, and hedge laying.
    Assistingwith bird surveys, butterfly transects, great crested newt monitoring and other surveys on the Zoo Estate.
    Regular data management, reporting, writing of articles and involvement in other field programme projects as and when needed.
    Involvement in partnership activities, including collaboration with Record The Local Environmental Record Centre for the Cheshire Region.
    Opportunity to focus on at least one specific project in relation to the current work in our conservation field programmes, often aligned with the data collected on the estate.The Work Placement The year in industry placement is for a period of up to 12 months commencing in September 2026
    Full Training with the Conservation & Science Teams

    Experience and interest in UK species conservation
    Ability to work outdoors in all weathers on challenging terrain.
    Highly organised, proactive in your approach to work and able to work independently as well as in a team, in the field and in the office.
    A desire to learn how science can be used to help support and inform best practice in field conservation projects
    Experience of using Microsoft Office software such as Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, and ideally GIS software.
    Driving licence preferred
    This opportunity is only available to those studying at a UK university on a degree programme with an industrial year. All industrial placements are full-time voluntary positions for 12 months, commencing September 2026.     The Role
    As an Events Team Member, you’ll support the smooth running of weddings, parties, conferences, and other exciting events at the zoo, across our stunning events space, The Square, and our award-winning British gastro-pub, The Oakfield. With exciting plans for 2026 and beyond, there’s never been a better time to join us!

    Your role will be hands-on, varied, and focused on ensuring every guest enjoys a world-class experience. In addition to event delivery, you will also support Food & Beverage front-of-house duties within the pub and other F&B units as required. You will also take the lead on small conferences, building positive relationships with clients and acting as a key point of contact on the day.

    Duties include:
    - Assisting with event setups and pack downs, ensuring spaces look their best
    - Welcoming and serving guests with a friendly, professional manner
    - Supporting food and beverage service, including serving meals, drinks, and clearing tables
    - Leading the delivery of small conferences, liaising with clients and ensuring their requirements are met
    - Building and maintaining strong client relationships to support repeat business and positive feedback
    - Supporting front-of-house Food & Beverage operations within the pub and other F&B outlets when required
    - Maintaining cleanliness and presentation across event spaces and F&B areas
    - Working with colleagues and managers to deliver seamless events from start to finishThe Package
    You’ll be working a variety of shifts, including during our core zoo opening hours, as well as early morning or evening work for events such as weddings and corporate functions or late-night opening.
    Permanent contract 20 hours per week
    £12,698.40 per annum based on 20 hours per week
    Working hours vary based on contract, 5 out of 7 availability. Will include weekends, bank holidays and evenings. Additional hours potentially available during busy periods and overtime will be paid.

    Support the Visitor Engagement Manager to develop and deliver consistently high-quality conservation engagement.
    Line manager, recruit, lead, develop and motivate a team of Zoo Ranger to ensure efficient delivery for The Reserve.
    Increase the conservation impact of commercial activity (e.g. Weddings and corporate events) through delivering memorable, audience focussed engagements that surprise and delight.
    Implement policies, standard operating procedures and safe working practices to ensure the team follow best practice and are compliant with all relevant guidelines and legislation.
    Ensure that all learning programmes are safe and appropriately risk assessed and comply with relevant legislation. In particular ensuring that our programmes with children, young people and adults at risk follow best practice in regard to safeguarding.
    Develop skills and knowledge in the areas of conservation education, science communication and public engagement, keeping up to date with best practice, researching excellence and sharing practice both internally and externally.
    Collate and use KPI and evaluation data to drive a process of continual improvement, contributing to research about the impact of our engagement and education.
    Manage allocated resources, ensuring initiatives are well planned and deliver maximum value for money and effort.
    Interact with guests of all ages, including children, families and other audiences.
    Be expected to deliver across a wide range of mediums including talks, table-top activities, play based activities and storytelling.
    Collaborate and build a strong working relationship with the Hotel General Manager at TROO hospitality and assist with the operational oversight of The Reserve experience.
    The Package Contract Type Permanent
    This is a full-time role (40 hours per week) operating on a two-week rotating roster, which includes working every other weekend. Core working hours are typically between 1:00pm and 9:30pm, with one to two office-based days per week worked from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Some early morning shifts will be required, and you will occasionally provide cover for daytime operations for the wider Ranger Team.
    Starting salary of £30,000 per annum
