British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Product Developer in Southampton What are the key objectives and expectations from this role? The key purpose of the role is to lead technology development workstreams for BAT’s oral product category (Modern Oral). A primary responsibility will be to ideate, develop, and evaluate new technologies and materials to drive innovation and improvements of current products. This role will involve collaboration with various partner groups to ensure that solutions are aligned with our commercial strategy. The incumbent will be responsible for leading and delivering innovation projects using existing and novel technologies, addressing unmet consumer needs as well as navigating existing & emerging regulatory requirements, culminating in the filing of intellectual property rights on the inventions in collaboration with the Patents & Legal teams. The scope of this role encompasses a broad range of applicability, predominantly, but not limited to Modern Oral products manufactured using pharmaceutical grade nicotine. Product formats will range from conventional modern oral white pouches to other novel formats. The ideal candidate will possess a strong fundamental science background, ., Chemistry, Chemical or Materials Engineering, Food Science, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. They must also demonstrate experience of working in a related laboratory environment.  What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization? This role will use technical expertise to deliver ‘technology block’ projects – directly supported by a senior product developer, and a senior technologist, as well as a broader team of product developers. Collaboration with other Centers of Excellence within R&D, external vendors, research organizations and innovation partners, as an essential part of the role. The Product Developer I will also aid the identification of continuous improvement activities for ways of working within the team and promote a collaborative and inclusive environment with the broader group. Your key responsibilities will include: Identify and develop enabling technologies and formulations, utilising levers such as – but not limited to – novel ingredients, materials, or process technologies, to address consumer opportunity spaces, intellectual property gaps and emerging regulatory requirements for the Modern Oral category. Translate data into actionable insights and testable hypotheses, leading to technical solutions to problems. Lead the technical development and verification of technologies and formulations from problem definition and ideation through to verification of prototype performance. Create scientifically robust technical and consumer learning plans. Build and leverage relationships and external research partners and suppliers. Lead completion of project activities in accordance with R&D innovation and governance processes Secure IP in partnership with patent attorneys Provide technical support for future scale-up. What are we looking for? Demonstrated laboratory and early project management experience. History of technical curiosity with problem solving skills (critical) Holds industry experience in product development (preferred) Demonstrate experience of lab management with procedures and processes To have a rough understanding of regulation/compliance Understanding of project timescales and how the role contributes to the broader R&D innovation pipeline. The team’s responsibilities encompass the entire battery R&D processes, including battery design, manufacturer selection, validation testing, device integration, and post market support. Additionally, the team is tasked with developing new technical solutions for future products and conducting failure analysis to ensure battery optimal performance and reliability. The Power CoE team is seeking a skilled technical specialist with expertise in cell design & verification testing, cell selections, strong data analysis and problem-solving skills. The candidate will work primarily in BAT’s Southampton battery test lab, supporting battery development and device validation activities within New Categories. A key responsibility of this role will be thorough testing of emerging battery technologies and chemistries to access their performance and suitability for inclusion in BAT’s future device portfolio. Your key responsibilities will include: In-house cell verification and validation testing for multiple projects following specific test protocols, including current and new battery formats, chemistries, or device operating principles. Analysing and reporting results in the designated format. Providing laboratory support . equipment maintenance, cross-functional testing and administrative documentation management. Supporting specification of battery requirements from detailed project briefs. Collaboration with battery manufacturers in terms of data verification and alignment. These are the most onerous global regulations, will cover most the requirements of other jurisdictions and will affect BAT before those in other jurisdictions. Reward Project Lead is to drive Reward data evidence work for pay related disclosures in CSRD across the globe and ensure at the least compliance level data availability.
