British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Compliance and Legal Operations Manager, Western Europe in London. The Senior Compliance and Legal Operations Manager, Western Europe is expected to lead the Compliance agenda, as well as ensure the effective and efficient delivery of Legal Operations in Western Europe. The role is a key member of the Western Europe Legal Leadership Team and supports the Area Head of Legal with the strategic leadership of the function. The role will require you to provide strategic counselling on a variety of Compliance matters and ensure that the vital controls are in place to ensure compliance with legal and internal regulations, in an Area where we are at the forefront when it comes to delivering the BAT strategy of building A Better Tomorrow by reducing the health impact of our business. In addition, you will be required to ensure the effective and efficient management of legal team resources by the design and implementation of processes and effective use of technology and human resource.
    Your key responsibilities will include: Ensure the effective and efficient management of Compliance activities across WE, including but not limited to the roll out of global and regional initiatives. Ensure the effectiveand efficient management of Legal Operations* across WE, including but not limited to the roll out of global and regional legal transformation initiatives. Develop and implement internal process guidelines, templates and workflows to manage risk and optimise the use of legal resource (working in close collaboration with End Market Legal, Regional Legal and Compliance and Global Business Integrity Team colleagues). Lead in the assessment of suitability and implementation of technical solutions for use in WE Legal. Take charge and handle all change planning and associated communication. Travel required. What are we looking for?  Experience Required 8+ years’ experience in an in-house legal and/or compliance department or relevant operational management role, with a consistent track record of risk management. In-depth knowledge of industry regulations and standards, such money laundering, antitrust law, data protection, sanctions etc. Experience in developing and implementing compliance policies, procedures, and systems. Experience in conducting compliance audits, controls, and training. Strong partner management skills, and ability to plan, anticipate and run priorities to optimise output and enhance the effectiveness of commercial solutions. Ability to influence and foster buy-in from people at senior management levels and across peers and juniors. Highly articulate confident individual with excellent written communication, presentational and drafting skills. Capable of communicating fluently in written and spoken English. Hands-on, adaptable and pro-active attitude, sound commercial judgement and ability to work under pressure and to cope with unexpected and varied demands. * The optimisation of workflows within the legal team, including but not limited to, the development of standardised processes, adoption of technologies and use of alternative resource for non-legal/low risk tasks. Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required Thinks strategically and acts commercially. Helps by shaping and driving strategy. Learns quickly and is agile. Collaborative and influences. Focuses on creative innovations in the provision of legal services. Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required Licensed professional – legal and/or compliance qualifications preferred. Key objectives are: Drive CMF development on projects from concept to production, ensuring quality CMF execution. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional to join an FMCG FTSE 100 company, looking to support the business program to shape product safety approaches for the rapidly growing BAT product portfolio. The purpose of the role is to lead the toxicological ingredient and material evaluations of BAT products in accordance with guidelines from the Product Stewardship Council (PSC) in line with the R&D Policy Framework, Corporate Positions, and specific legislation for our product categories. The role will deliver toxicological programs that can unlock novel products and ingredients commercially, while supporting the communication of our science to help position BAT as industry experts whilst achieving desired business growth. What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization? The role will be the key contact to organize the toxicological assessment of novel ingredients, materials and technologies to be used in the development of products. They will direct the work of evaluators delivering desk based toxicological evaluations in accordance with Internal BAT guidelines and the R&D policy framework in order to support BATs portfolio. Toxicological evaluations will be carried out to support all stages of product development. This role encompasses strategic scope, with the delivery and communication of toxicological data packages for the identified ingredients and products across categories. The role will require new processes to be created to streamline evaluations and will require formalization of processes through robust documentation. Work will be conducted under the guidance of the Toxicology team manager, Senior Scientist, and other team members to overcome challenging assessments, outlining data requirements/gaps to build robust safety evaluations of products. Role holder will be responsible for own and others’ workload management and communicating with stakeholders (line managers and Project teams) on progress to achieve business milestones. Your key responsibilities will include: Be a knowledgeable and enabling partner to the project teams, guiding them on the toxicology evaluations, tests and design needed to build the data packages from early-stage sensory testing of prototypes to commercial launch. Author, review and sign off risk assessments as part of the toxicological evaluation of new ingredients, technologies, and materials. Support the development of strategies for toxicological evaluation of platform products, whilst challenging existing processes to identify and improve ways of working across the department with the endorsement of the Product Stewardship Council (PSC). Apply appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems based on an understanding and experience of biology, toxicology, or chemistry. Oversee the planning and execution of risk assessments, working collaboratively within the team to deliver on time and in full for the business. Provide training and coaching to junior members of the team and the wider business. Maintain and build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and designated contacts within BAT. Can this be your future role? Proficient computing skills to facilitate use of in-house database and skilled user of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Ability to tailor scientific communications to different audiences. Demonstrable a positive attitude along with a drive to succeed and flexibility in adapting to new tasks and changing priorities. Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required Relevant science background equivalent to a degree level qualification, preferably in a biology or chemistry discipline, with good understanding of the principles of Toxicology. Successful applicants will be involved in our extensive scientific research program which spans a broad spectrum of scientific fields - including molecular biology, human biology, toxicology, chemistry, biomedical sciences, psychology, neuroscience, sensorial science, data science, computer science, product design, and engineering disciplines. In the UK, we offer 12-months placement opportunities (starting on 1st September 2025) to undergraduate students looking to gain practical experience within a vibrant and innovative industrial setting. As part of the scheme, you will be partnered with a mentor, have regular reviews with your Line Manager and work on projects that impact the business. BAT has an established placement programme, with a dedicated Placement Team, which provides training and development throughout the placement. This includes sessions for onboarding, presentation skills, critical thinking, scientific poster presentations and ‘speed networking’ with senior management. Successful applicants are provided with multiple opportunities to develop transferable skills in addition to gaining ‘hands on’ experience in a technical discipline. As part of the scheme students get a chance to cultivate their independent thinking and problem-solving skills in addition to working in and contributing to a team. Cross functional/department working and participation in other research activities is also encouraged, where appropriate. Previous work experience in a practical ‘hands-on’ role would be useful but not essential. This role is due to start in September 2025, and we will be shortlisting applications and carrying out video/ online interviews whilst the advert is live. We will look to make an offer to the successful candidate as close to the closing date as possible. However, the vetting and onboarding processes for successful candidates won’t begin until the role is opened in our system, which is likely to be later in 2025, so we will contact successful candidates again to commence these processes when the position opens. Your key responsibilities will include: Designing experiments and conducting laboratory-based research, including prototype sample manufacture and physico-chemical analysis using a range of scientific methods Supporting with data generation on e-liquid product assessment (analytical and sensorial), processing data and conducting statistical analysis Organising sensorial assessments on newly developed e-liquid prototypes Collaborating with subject matter experts to scope previous learnings and establishing robust design of experiment, methods of product assessment and evaluations Liaising with product support functions to ensure prototypes meet regulatory and safety requirements suitable for testing Working with external analytical suppliers to establish accurate methods of assessing product performance over time through collaboration and knowledge of analytical or applied chemistry Collaborating effectively with colleagues in the Vapour Consumables team, internal stakeholders, and external partners Communicating progress/updates proactively to key stakeholders via presentations, reports and meetings.
