BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines as well as V8 and V12 engines, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles. BMW Plant Hams Hall, Birmingham - Level 3 Maintenance Technician - 4 Year Apprenticeship (August 2026)
We are looking for a committed and eager to learn individual to join our Maintenance team, responsible for ensuring all production equipment, both mechanical and electrical, is operating efficiently and safely. This involves engaging in tasks such as repairing and rebuilding machinery, designing process improvements, and assessing the need for future repairs to prevent issues from occurring, tasks that you will be involved in as your apprenticeship progresses. Our Maintenance team is keen to teach our apprentices a range of skills needed to be successful, supporting you to ensure your apprenticeship experience is both engaging and valuable to your future. Your Training - The BMW Group offer an enhanced level 3 apprenticeship commencing in August 2026. During your time with us, you will be studying towards a Level 3 BTEC in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, provided by Birmingham Metropolitan College. The training that you receive during your apprenticeship involves studying modern, state-of-the-art automotive production technology as well as the latest innovations in manufacturing techniques. The four-year programme is designed to enable you to experience different aspects of engineering and production technology, focusing on general maintenance of our state-of-the-art production facility and systems including robotics, controls systems, machining, fluid power, electronics, welding, and many more.
Alongside the practical engineering skills that are gained, the program will also focus on your personal and professional development. Your Year-on-Year Progression - The first year of the program is purely in a learning environment where in addition to starting the academic requirements of your program, you will undertake practical training to qualify you with Employers Units of Competence. Your training will cover a wide range of engineering disciplines such as milling and turning, hand skills, electrical and electronic circuits, control systems, fluid power, programmable logic controllers, welding, and many more.
In the second and third years, you will continue with the academic requirements of the program alongside on-the-job training. Your on-the-job training will comprise of placements in a number of our maintenance departments and may also involve placements at other BMW UK sites. If at the end of your second year, you meet both your targeted grades and our expectations in terms of engagement in your work, you may have the opportunity to continue your fully funded academic training beyond L3 onto an HNC Level 4 Engineering or Foundation Degree Level 5.
In your fourth year, your on-the-job training will continue and will become more targeted to your final job role. If required, you will start working a shift pattern to help better integrate you with your team. Finally, you will also begin to take responsibility for your own projects, something that may include designing, installing, and monitoring process improvements. Qualifications and Experience A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Level 5/C (or above) including Maths and English.
