As the on-site Health & Safety Co-ordinator, you will take a hands-on leadership role in ensuring that our health met and exceeded.
Job Description
Key ResponsibilitiesTraining & InductionDeliver and oversee onboarding training for all new starters, ensuring a strong foundation in safety and food hygiene.Ensure ongoing refresher training is completed and recorded and identify training needs across teams.Standards & AuditsLead preparations for internal and external audits ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and safety are consistently maintained.Work proactively with kitchen and service teams to maintain excellent hygiene and safety standards aiming to exceed industry benchmarks.Conduct regular walkarounds and spot checks to observe practices, offer coaching, and address any gaps.Safety Culture & CoachingChampion a strong safety culture where all team members, from chefs to supervisors, understand and take ownership of their safety responsibilities.Offer ongoing coaching and mentoring to managers, chefs and team members to build internal capability and accountability.Compliance & DocumentationMonitor and manage safety documentation including temperature logs, cleaning records, allergen records, risk assessments and safety audits.Ensure all records are well-organised, up to date, and compliant with both internal policies and legal standards.Ensure collaborative working with client practices managing all third party contractors and ensuring compliance for all project work including renovation and mobilisation of new catering areas.Risk Assessment & InvestigationConduct comprehensive risk assessments for events, new equipment, team members, and various areas of the premises.Lead investigations into accidents, near misses, allergy incidents and alleged food poisoning cases, and ensure effective root cause analysis and responses.Ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly based on investigation findings, and that appropriate follow-up is documented to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.Work closely with team members to ensure they are aware of potential risks and engage them in safety practices, fostering a proactive safety culture across the team.Emergency PreparednessSupport and coordinate emergency response planning, making sure all team members are fully trained in client procedures, including fire drills, first aid arrangements, and evacuation procedures.Tech & SystemsTake the lead on implementing a new digital safety management system, ensuring it is fully embedded into location processes.Confidently use the system for managing temperature records, incident reporting, HACCP, and compliance tracking.Provide training and support to the wider team to ensure consistent and effective use across the location.Monitor the use of the system to ensure safety performance is accurately tracked, reported, and that timely action is taken to address any issues or non-compliance.Collaboration & ReportingAct as an integral member of the on-site leadership team, building strong working relationships to support a proactive safety culture. Attend regular location and operational meetings to provide consistent, policy-aligned advice and guidance.Attend client and internal meetings, providing clear reporting, insight, and practical solutions.Work collaboratively with the wider Food, Health & Safety team to stay informed of policy updates, contribute to the development and rollout of safety initiatives, and ensure smooth implementation at location level.Share insights, suggest improvements, and actively contribute to continuous improvement efforts across the contract, ensuring company standards are not only met but embedded in day-to-day operations.Provide support and occasional visits to other Baxterstorey locations to ensure consistent safety practices and performance.
Qualifications
Qualifications & ExperienceNEBOSH Certificate and Level 4 Food Safety (desired) If not already in place required to commit to programme to gain certification in first two years of employmentBSc or MSc in Environmental Health (desired)Proven experience in a health & safety or food safety role within hospitality, contract catering, or a similar fast-paced environmentComfortable working with clients and regulatory bodies, including experience supporting or leading EHO visits and auditsStrong understanding of HACCP, allergen management, and health & safety legislation relevant to catering operationsExcellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiencesSkilled at training, coaching, and influencing teams at all levels, from front-line chefs to senior managersConfident using digital compliance tools and systems to manage documentation, monitor performance, and drive improvementsProactive, solutions-focused mindset with a genuine passion for raising standards and supporting continuous improvementDemonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development to keep up to date with the latest industry best practices, safety regulations, and innovations in food safety and health & safety management.
