Principal Platform Engineer - Automation Platforms

    Location: Norwich

    Salary: £70000 - £90000

This is a great job for someone who loves solving complex technical challenges and shaping the future of automation at scale.

Are you someone who enjoys setting technical direction, mentoring others, and driving excellence across engineering communities?

Do you love to work at the intersection of architecture, reliability, and innovation-while influencing how an entire organisation builds modern automation solutions?

This role would suit someone with deep hands-on expertise in low-code and automation platforms, such as Appian, Tungsten Total Agility and Power Platform.

You might be an experienced Senior/Lead Designer, Staff Engineer or Architect who is ready for a step up into a strategic, organisation-wide technical leadership role.

If you enjoy bringing clarity to complex problems and setting the bar for engineering quality, this could be the perfect next move.

    A bit about the job

As our Principal Engineer for Automation, you'll be Aviva's technical authority across key platforms, including Appian, Tungsten (IDP) and Power Platform.

You'll define the architectural patterns, engineering guardrails and quality standards that ensure we deliver secure, scalable and future-ready automation solutions.

You'll join a collaborative engineering community focused on modernising how we build automation, improving performance and reliability, and uplifting technical capability across teams and suppliers.

You'll take ownership of the most complex engineering challenges, shape our platform roadmaps, and directly influence how automation supports Aviva's long-term technology strategy.

Skills and experience we're looking for
Expert-level Appian engineering and architecture knowledge, with strong understanding of records/data fabric, CDTs, interfaces, process models and integrations. Strong experience in IDP/Tungsten engineering, including document classification, extraction accuracy tuning, and exception-handling pipelines. Demonstrated ability to solve high-impact technical problems across distributed automation systems, including performance, capacity, and HA/DR considerations. Proven experience influencing technical direction, coaching engineers, and driving consistency in engineering practices across teams or suppliers. Strong problem-solving, communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to explain complex topics in a clear, outcome-focused way.
