Experience Strong relevant experience of the Skills listed above or associated experience that can be applied to electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical design in a regulated industry. Design and specification of COTS and bespoke sub-assemblies and equipment suitable for 19” racks / cabinets. Interconnection Design (i.e. wiring harnesses, copper or fibre optical network interconnections, connector types, power distribution and data comms, spatial constraints, environmental considerations). Full engineering lifecycle experience (Capture, Design, Implementation, Test). Working with requirements in a structured and evidential manner. Production of Design / Test Specifications and Test Reports.

Scope We are seeking a Software Engineer to join a high-impact, mission-critical space programme – the Rosalind Franklin rover. This is an exciting opportunity to work on onboard spacecraft software, with long-term visibility and career development opportunities.
Role The Software Engineer will be responsible for contributing to the design, development, and validation of onboard software for spacecraft systems. This includes working in compliance with ESA and ECSS standards, supporting hardware-software integration, and ensuring rigorous software testing.
Responsibilities Contribute to the design, development, and validation of onboard software for spacecraft systems. Support UML-based design and documentation in accordance with ECSS standards. Develop code in C/C++, with future potential to evolve towards Rust. Collaborate using Linux-based development environments and JIRA for task tracking, participating in Agile-style delivery. Support hardware-software integration, understanding the limitations and constraints of embedded systems and single-core/multi-core transitions. Participate in onboard software testing, ensuring compliance with ESA practices and engineering discipline.
Required Experience Proven software development experience, ideally covering the full lifecycle. Strong experience in onboard software development, preferably for critical systems Hands-on knowledge of ECSS standards (DO-178 knowledge is beneficial but not applicable here). Experience working close to hardware and understanding performance constraints. Experience designing in UML and managing software lifecycles in collaborative teams.
Required Skills Proficiency in C / C++ (openness to Rust in the future is beneficial). Scripting or additional languages such as JavaScript are a bonus. Experience working in Linux environments. Familiarity with Jira or similar project/task management tools.
